The wife of the US defense secretary Pete Hegseth attended two meetings with foreign defense officials during which sensitive information was discussed, according to a new report from the Wall Street Journal.

The Journal’s report on Hegseth arrived late on Friday as he faced scrutiny for detailing plans of a military strike in a group chat on Signal, made public by a journalist at the Atlantic who had been added to the chat. Multiple Democrats have called for his resignation while a bipartisan group of senators sent a letter to the defense department calling for an inquiry into the group chat.

Hegseth’s wife, Jennifer Hegseth, has been present at two meetings where sensitive information was discussed, according to the Journal, citing multiple people who were present at the meetings or have knowledge of her presence at them.

I don’t think that’s the point. The point is that Pete is sharing classified information with someone who doesn’t have clearances. “Who knows who she shared it with afterwards” is an indictment of Pete’s decision making and criminality, not an indictment of his wife. She could bear some responsibility, though, if she knowingly spread classified information after receiving it. But that is definitely the secondary point here.

because she’s had zero vetting and likely a prime target for foreign intelligence agencies.

Well it would be embarrassing if the Secret Service had to keep stopping him from mooning everyone and wiping the vomit off his chin.

Hard to conclude much about how much of an issue it is without knowing what “sensitive” means in this context.

If it’s “classified”, then there are formal rules. But sensitive isn’t precisely-defined.

The issue is his general lackadaisical approach to sensitive and classified information. The Signal group chat debacle is not a one off thing, this dude just doesn’t give a shit in his handling of sensitive information with no regard to whether it’s classified or puts people’s lives at risk.
