  • I’m not here to influence things. I was in the thick of it for a bit, but I’m here now.

I love coding. I get to do it for money. It allows me a nice little apartment in a nice environment and with my wife chipping in her half we’re a little insulated from financial strife. A little.

That’s it. I code, I eat food and live with a beautiful girl who seems to care for me, and we occasionally get to go see family or a strange new place. I’m flying as close to the sun as I dare.

Find peace in your existence and enjoy what you’re doing, whether programming is the bread or it’s the butter. It’s all a means to an end of doing something you love for what little time we have here.

  • You’re planning to tax on events like sales and hope there’s enough churn to still fully-fund the things property tax provides for? That’s really hard to make a case for.

Given bungalows rarely deliver a town enough to recoup on providing and maintaining services anyway, you’re starting with a very tricky goal to maintain. Detroit happened, and that was with consistent, recurring payments.

Then you want to put a home sales tax on that is big enough to pay the back taxes plus borrowing cost to hold the debt and you think people are gonna go for this? What if you’ve owned your home 15 years, paid no taxes on the infrastructure maintenance, ambulance fire or police service, mail service, street lights and pavement, and then your house burns down? You could very well owe more than the lot is worth alone. What do we tell the homeowner about that? The town can’t absorb the loss given margins are so low.

Nah. I don’t think you can sell that idea to the voters.

Wow, guys. I don’t know her from whatever the shit Fox said, so forgive me for discounting the speaker for something you personally witnessed. I’d ask what she did other than be the target of the Bernie backstabbing, but it feels like COVID and 2 Trumps ago.

    So. She has a point.

Remember when we didn’t kill the messenger because we remembered what Genghis did for that?

  • Survivor bias aside, I’m not sure the UI doesn’t make this drive-by trolling worse. The reddit UI (hi Lemmy) is threaded but disjoint, and the excellent response to one tree of responses isn’t useful to or seen in another tree – and those trees will develop in parallel in almost every discussion.

I worry that quips and cheap takes stand out because they’re fast and block actual discussion more, so have that mock ‘finalising’ effect. Ending a discussion thread is not concluding it .

… and we all have that cousin whom no one invites anywhere because he’ll argue the shit out of something like a jackal worrying a carcass, until people just give up and let him wander smugly off to his little corner in contrarian triumph.

  • She was the best candidate at the time.

She may be the best candidate at time of polling.

    Decide:

    • if the issue was the message and framing, then keep the candidate and fix the framing and message.
    • if the issue was a career justice worker, educated and thoughtful, with the ability to speak a 9-word sentence without tripping over the 7th-grade words, then find someone better suited to weed out corruption and show the hardest workers in America that they’re welcome and respected again. While you’re at it, find a better running-mate than the Coach. It’s America’s step-mom and wide uncle, squaring off against that creepy old man and his weird kid. And keep the message.

America was overconfident that an actually good candidate with an excellent resume was a obvious fit for a job against a career felon and fraudster; more believable and better for America. If America can’t see it, it’s an education issue that can’t be solved until better leadership is in for a decade. Until then, I guess it’s hammering them with a “this is your America; do you want to fix it or not?” message.

people can’t handle not looking professional 😭

For weeird definitions of ‘professional’, right?

At both my jobs, I talk in points; I write in points; I rewrite their long-winded shit “just to be sure we’re clear,” in points.

It’s not god’s work I’m doing, but it preserves my sanity when it’s distilled down to facts and goals like my technical writing prof recommended so many years ago. \shrug
