“The unformulated message of an assembly of news items from every quarter of the globe is that the world today is one city. All war is civil war. All suffering is our own.” - Marshall McLuhan, University of Toronto

My Lemmy and Reddit and Bluesky experience of people who ban / block / moderate away difficult ideas they don’t grasp in 3 seconds or less meme-thinking Twitter-thinking fits what Dr. Martin Luther King Jr said about moderators who shut down any attempts to bridge gaps in the Tower of Babel communications crisis on electric media systems:

“I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro’s great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen’s Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to “order” than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says: “I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action”; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man’s freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a “more convenient season.” Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection.”

Being banned at the drop of the hat for even the most slight differences or disagreements, “burn books” rapid solution you see all over social media systems in 2024 and 2025 (REMINDER: they did not have Unicode text and “Block Buttons” in 1937 Germany, when they found social messages they disagreed with, they burned paper magazines and printed books).
