Like the title! I want to cultivate some helpful skills but do so gradually, as a hobbyist. Tempted to get into lockpicking, haha.

Public speaking! It’s something you can teach yourself by reading a few articles and recording yourself with your phone. Depending on where you live, you may be able to attend Toastmasters or some kind of open mic night to practice. It’s very useful in almost any arena, but in particular is essential for socialists.
Unfortunately for teenage me, I happen to be decently experienced in public speaking. It’s useful now, but it was horrifying as a younger me, haha.
Recommend this. My partner is a fantastic public speaker and I’m so jealous of her for it as it is such a useful and important skill. She wasn’t always good but has had professional tuition and coaching and then buckets of experience. You too can learn it - but it’s getting the practice in front of large audiences that’s the hard part. Her work has a presentation club where staff can volunteer to present anything of their interest to a large audience, just for the experience of doing so, which is a really nice low stakes way to do it. Perhaps universities may have a public speaking society which would do similar?
“powerpoint nights” seem to be taking off (both in friend groups and public ones) and they might fill a similar niche
