Great Horned Owl
Alberta, Canada
One of the perks of photographing abandoned structures is the possibility of finding creatures taking shelter within their walls. The Great Horned Owl commonly dwells in derelict buildings, and of course, I am always happy to discover one! It sure beats encountering pigeons who scare the doo-doo out of me when they unexpectedly fly out of windows.
And shrewd owl business it is!
Me: I was over at the Thurmond street public library skimming through Rogue Herries by Hugh Walpole when I suddenly came over all Strigine.
Shopkeep: Eh?
Me: Owlish.
Shopkeep: Come again?
Me: I want to see some owls.
Shopkeep: Oh! I thought you were complaining about the bouzouki player!
I like a nice, dance, you Scopsy!
Will you shut that bloody dancing up?!
Have you, in fact, got any owls here, at all?
Let’s keep it simple, erm, how about a Screech Owl?
I'm afraid we don't get much call for Screech Owl....
Not much call for it?! It’s the single most popular owl in the country!
Not 'round these parts!
And what is the most popular owl, “‘round here”?
Minahassa Masked Owl. It's staggeringly popular. Our number 1 seller.
Ok, I’m game… Have you got any Minahassa Masked Owl? I’m expecting no.
I'll have a look sir.... Mmmmmmm.... No.
Predictable really… An act of pure optimisms to ask the question…
