Just went on a 7am rant about this shit (sorry to my partner). I’ll never understand people who are so confident about these things when they clearly haven’t looked into it beyond the subject of reddit posts.
But yeah I’m in a fucking echo chamber because I hold an ideology that the US government has been stomping on for 100 years. I’m in an echo chamber when I can’t even speak my mind without having to either explain everything I’m saying or find alternative words to use because everything left of GW Bush is satanic, genocidal, aUtHOriTAriAn, fascist (lmao), or whatever other nonsense they come up with.
I’m in an echo chamber when it took me like 20 years of studying human behavior, countless books and conversations with experts like labor historians. All those stats classes, being a self taught engineer, living all over the US and even in other countries for a while, and all the other shit I’ve done in my life that has informed my opinions. Literally every communist I know over the age of ~35 (grew up before internet search was easy) spent years figuring out they were actually not a liberal or a god damn libertarian (US variety) or anArChO caPiTAlisT.

The only echo chambers that even exist for leftist thought are maybe like insular academics in Vietnam who specialize in Marxist studies. Nowhere in the West or even in English speaking spaces is truly some echo chamber because we’re inundated with capitalist pressure from every direction every second of our lives, even if we’re on a forum where we make goofs about libs.
We can’t have one single space to communicate with like-minded people? We’re the ones who’ve brainwashed ourselves because we dare to say maybe western hegemony is a bad thing? Try saying anything nice in America about Chinese people, Muslims, or whoever the current enemy is supposed to be this week.
There’s a massive blanket of bloodthirsty national pride and hatred of poor people that infects every single aspect of mass culture, social relations, everything. We’re the ones who are trying to break free of all that. And yet we’re in an echo chamber for all agreeing that the problem exists in the first place.
