Valve's popular handheld gaming PC recently passed 14,200 officially rated games, meaning there's never been a better time to own one.

This is just talking about games approved through Valve’s verification process. There are a lot of games that work that are “unverified”, not to mention the entire history of gaming available through emulation.

    I think if you’re buying a switch in 2024 then a steam deck is not really for you. I love my deck but there’s no denying it’s a bit janky at times, especially if you jump between desktop and gaming mode a lot. It’s not a frictionless system like the switch which is much more set it and forget it (minus the atrocious digital store experience). Just the dock experience between the two is night and day.

    The deck is also not available in many countries still.

    The average steamdeck user has to be more tech savvy than than the average switch user.

      You say that, but I can keep my deck in docked/gaming mode, and my son who’s only 7 has been playing away it like its a switch.

      I think people just like to make excuses for their spending habits, which isn’t wrong at all. It just becomes disheartening when you say such blatantly wrong things.

        I own both a switch and deck and have used them for years. They simply aren’t the same re: usability.

        Have your kid swap between docked and handheld while playing a game. Good luck!

          Generally speaking you’re either playing docked, or sitting down. Not typically both, but I know what you mean. Even then though, any of the games he plays just automatically readjust the resolution to handheld mode and works just fine. Then when you plug it back in, it knows to stop using the steam as monitor 1 and switches the output to the TV.

          Not sure how you’re doing it, but its worked fine for me.

            What? Switch users constantly swap between handheld and docked. That’s one the major draws. It takes like 4 seconds to go from handheld to docked or docked to handheld.

            The steam deck simply can’t do that seamlessly. You have to save, close, just completely stop what you’re doing. If you’re lucky the screen won’t be borked during the transition forcing a restart. But like 30% of the time you have to restart or random stuff just doesn’t work.

              What? Didn’t realize it was such a draw, but irregardless as I said, you just unplug the screen. Its as easy as that with a hub, just like a switch. I do it daily.

                A switch doesn’t need you to unplug anything. Drop it in, take it out. 3s of interruption. I love my deck and never use my switch but even I get the appeal.

                    What kind of patronizing bullshit is this? I talked about the steamdeck dock like 2 comments ago. Of course I know what a hub is. If you’re going to be an ass then just end the conversation now and do us both a favor. You obviously know I know what that is.
