There is historical record in the west going back to at least WWII acknowledging that area as Chinese territorial waters. Just because you only follow news cycles while they’re hot, doesn’t mean all of history prior to now stops existing.

During WW2, the KMT consistently prioritized the threat of Mao’s armies over the threat of the Japanese, stalling pan-Chinese efforts to fight back against the Japanese and inadvertently leading to hundreds of thousands more dead, raped, or worse.
