I’ve been giving Jellyfish can’t swim at night
I didn’t watch Days with My Stepsister, but if you believe AC, then it was the best thing since sliced bread apparently. The fanbase must at least be pretty dedicated to bring out the vote to such an extent.
I was just about to ask, is it as awful as it sounds?
I only watched the first 3 episodes, but it handled things pretty well up to that point. The characters were mature which was quite appealing. I only dropped it because I have limited time and need to choose what I watch.
Everything I have seen about it indicates that it is actually a serious drama about finding yourself in a step-sibling relationship with somebody that you develop feelings for. The title makes it sound suspicious as hell, but none of the tags on AniList or discussion I have seen here from those that have watched it make it seem like incest bait.
Relationships between step-siblings can and do actually happen in real life. I actually know of one example in my extended family of step-siblings marrying (though I was born in Alabama, so take that with a grain of salt). So, having a fictional story that is a serious take on the taboo nature of that relationship isn’t necessarily a terrible thing, but the title definitely warrants a double take.
but if you believe AC
Every time I see an AC ranking with shows I’ve watched I’m reminded that I shouldn’t trust AC.
I really enjoyed I Parry Everything, weird to see it so low or not even ranked in categories it makes sense for. I also watched No Longer Allowed in Another World and it’s way weirder to see it at the top of so many lists. Maybe some of the charm is lost in translation or I just don’t appreciate the play on tropes as much.
Makeine is great so far, half way through about to binge the other half. Lovely art, generally avoiding the gross tropes that turn me off with these types of anime. When those tropes are visited it still manages to frame things in a believable way. I need to get my wife to watch it for her take, but it feels like the girls are represented respectfully as their own relatable characters and not strictly some object for the male viewers to desire. Probably still not totally there, but feels nice to see some growth in that direction.
Curious if anyone can compare Makeine to Days with my Stepsister, and Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian. Both of those shows have some face value ick that’s keeping me from starting them.
I Parry Everything was nice. Not like top tier anime but a fun little show to watch casually. It gets a lot of hate for the MC not realizing his own strength, but it wasn’t that bad.
No Longer Allowed in Another World was great though. Really enjoyed it, both the comedy and the plot.
Personally disappointed that Ossan Newbie Adventurer didn’t make the top, that one is up there for me this season. If you liked Parry you’ll probably like this one too.
Makeine is more like Alya in that they romantic comedies. Makeine is heavier on the comedy, with a heavy reliance on failed-romance to drive the comedy/plot forward. Alya has a more prominent non-romantic drama plot that runs alongside the romance/flirting. Both feed a bit into a basic male sexual fantasy (Alya more so, but episode 2 of Makeine had a pretty unnecessarily spicy scene).
Days with my Stepsister is more of a romance / coming-of-age story without much comedy and I feel like it doesn’t excessively feed into a sexual fantasy. There’s like 1 exception early-ish in the season, but even that kinda felt like the main purpose was to shake up the story, rather than getting the viewers horny.
That scene in episode two certainly felt unnecessary, maybe a service to the horny viewers. They manage to keep it somewhat believable, where most other shows typically fail to do so. I think the overly interested in the younger characters’ romance teachers is weirder than that scene, though I’ve met people like that and they aren’t even exaggerations.
Maybe I just relate to the MC. There’s a reluctance to romance that takes me back. Most other anime I’ve seen way over exaggerate it, or don’t play on it at all.
I appreciate your explanation.
Man, is it just me or does all this seem like either generic isekai trash, generic “strongest with weakest skill” trash or generic incest-bait trash?
How do things like Dead Dead Demons Dedede Destruction not end up on a list like this? Corpo anime is exhausting.
Ey yo what the fuck Makeine wasn’t top 10?
It was #2. They just used the longer version of the English name: Too Many Losing Heroines. Makeine is just the portmanteau of the full title in Japanese, “Make Heroine ga Oosugiru.”
Apparently I’m fucking blind. Jesus Christ.
And the heroines just lost one more time as you looked right past them!
Harem trash is starting to reclaim its place from isekai trash as the top seasonal slop. Nature is healing.
I can’t believe monogatari isn’t even on here. What?
Idk if it’s just my circles but Nokotan had so much hype only for it to be mostly ok. Definitely could have been better.
Surprised Oshi no Ko didn’t rank higher though, it was top of this season for me.
I judged Days with my Stepsister off title alone and thought it was just incest bait, was it actually any good?
Oshi no Ko was truly fantastic this season. I was shocked to see it didn’t win Best Adaptation or Best Drama. At least it got the deserved Best ED win.
When those drums kicked in at the end 👌
Too Many Losing Heroines? Too many Ws.
