Thanks for asking the community about this. Here’s my two cents:

    • Many companies and developers choose paid, closed-source, or partially closed-source models without any malicious intent, tracking, or advertising. Restricting to FOSS will also choke out developers that are simply wishing to retain ownership of what they’ve created or wanting long-term sustainability.
    • I’d suggest using StrawPoll or something else to keep voting fair. Votes affect post visibility, and some instances don’t have the option to downvote.
    • I’d also love more of an introduction from our new mod (who you are, what interests you have, how you got here), especially seeing that your accounts are under 8 days old

I’d be fine with either. From what I can tell most Lemmy apps are already FOSS so this is really just about the small % of them that are closed source.

The only closed source app I can think of offhand is Sync for Lemmy and they already have their own official Lemmy community.

As a developer of a FOSS Lemmy client myself, this poll is really Inter (considering it’s biased towards the “upvote” makes its negative score even more significant). I suspected it, seeing the low adoption of my app (which I blamed solely on myself thinking “it’s a poorly made app”), but this is the confirmation.

People don’t care whether their software is proprietary or not, even people on Lemmy who should be more sensitive to the topic. People don’t care if they are tracked, displayed ads or have to pay for what should be a basic supply (like clean water or clean air). People want something which is “fancy” and make them feel like they “own” it and that ownership is linked to their status and ultimately to their ego.

I didn’t want to get political but I’m a Lemmy user too so I kind of have to jump to the consequence: this must be another effect of the brainwashing of western capitalism. Plus my app sucks 😂

Oh hey! Thanks for sharing your perspective! It’s always good to hear from devs.

I’ve seen Raccoon around, but haven’t tried it out yet. Is there anything interesting which sets it apart from apps like Eternity (my current favourite), Boost, or Connect?

No one is here trying to “steal” users from a “competitor” project, we are talking about open source, no one is making profit of it.

Eternity is a great app and I really love its endless UI customization possibilities, no other Lemmy client is so advanced in that regard. Moreover, if you are accustomed to the design of Infinity, that’s another great plus for it you won’t find anywhere.

You can experiment with other alternatives and discover what they do better and worse and form your idea. Both projects are work in progress (Eternity clearly states it in its Readme, Raccoon is experimental too) so expect unfinished/unimplemented features and some bugs.

I only use foss Lemmy apps, won’t touch a proprietary one as that defeats the point of Lemmy being open source and the foss ones are way better. But, this community is called lemmyapps, not fosslemmyapps. It should allow all but require all posts about non foss stuff to say [NOT FOSS] at the beginning of post title.

Also, what app did you make?

Edit: seems like you made raccoon. I use that half half with thunder, it’s a very good app. The moderation tools are sooo much better than any other app, and the design is really good.

I’m afraid it won’t be possible, my submissions get rejected because the APKs they build do not match the ones I upload on GitHub (due to resources files not being ordered in the same way across builds) and I didn’t find any solution…

For IzzyOnDroid you don’t even have to submit: if/when the maintainers decide your app is worth having it gets included.

Raccoon is a very small project and there are other well established apps which already do their job pretty well, so it’s not a big deal.

And I think it’s better like that.

The app is far from perfect and I’m looking for contributors (who knows if I’ll find any) while committing to the project when I have time, but it’s not “my project”, it belongs to the community…

I think the best way to do it would be to CLEARLY mark the non-FOSS apps that get submitted; a kind of badge of shame.

If it’s in the negative, you should clearly mark non foss apps by requiring every post about one to have [NOT FOSS] at the beginning of the title.

Also that was a bad way to do a poll because people might upvote without realizing it is a poll. A comment should be used for it instead.

There’s also the issue of some instances having downvoting disabled, and I think I remember reading something about downvoting federating oddly or something

Proprietary software is evil! Also if this poll ends up allowing it would you consider making another FOSS only community?

Proprietry software isnt necessarily evil but i think it being on a foss service like lemmy is sad. And no if we don’t win there will be no other subs.

I take issue with this voting system, as it will be skewed in favour of a narrow win for the upvote result.

Downvoting the post decreases visibility in most sorting algorithms. I would be curious to see the results if the upvote and downvote options were reversed.

Until Lemmy implements polls, a better method would have been to have two comments under this post which would be voted on, rather than making the post itself the poll.

I don’t think lemmy has comment pinning (but i could be wrong) and that will cause the down vote comment to sink and it will cause more confusion. Besides this post is pinned .
