PP would like that, wouldn’t he.
But WTF is Jagmeet playing at? The NDP is tied with the LPC at best and trailing them by a few points at worst. They’re in the 15-20% territory. And that’s without the NDP having a universally unpopular leader. He can’t save Canada from an unabashedly corporate government in the face of Poilievre. A government that’ll likely kill Jagmeet’s signature achievements. Such a move should be the end of his leadership, but more importantly it would be bad for Canadians. I hope he’s just posturing and just pushing Trudeau to resign, which he should absolutely do in my opinion.
If Jagmeet resigned and new blood came in the NDP could be the new party in Canada, but just like Trudeau these people don’t want to give up power, despite not performing well at all.
I assume he’s playing at two things:
- distancing NDP from Trudeau government
- encouraging Trudeau to resign
Trudeau will have over a month before Parliament is back in session to decide.
- distancing NDP from Trudeau government
Oh yeah, that makes sense in addition to pressuring him to resign. That said, if Trudeau doesn’t resign and parliament comes back in session, it’s gonna look real funny when PP calls Jagmeet out on his promise to bring down the government and he doesn’t.
One thing occurred to me.
By saying ‘we will introduce a non-confidence vote,’ he has some leeway in when it happens. If he holds off for a few weeks, he can actually push bavk the date while pressuring Trudeau.
Meanwhile, Poilievre is going to introduce a motion the second that house is back in session, and Singh can choose to ignore it if he wants because Poilievre jumped the gun.
Singh is only 2 points higher in net favourability than Pollievre.
Right now the NDP are forecast to get far fewer seats than liberals. Calling an election will effectively end Singhs tenure as it will become clear how unpopular he is.
For anyone wondering if the NDP non-confidence motion goes through we still have a while till a election:
The next sitting isn’t till Jan 27 - https://www.ourcommons.ca/en/sitting-calendar/2025
Min election/campaign cycle is 37 days - https://www.elections.ca/content.aspx?section=ele&dir=cycle&document=index&lang=e
Poilievre says House should be recalled
I wonder if he will be surprised when the house is prorogued until the autumn?
I wonder if he’ll say how unethical that would be, unlike when Harper did it (when he was an MP).
Also, he wrote an essay about the importance of personal freedom, and advocated for two term limits for members of Parliament (as well as pledging to only serve two terms if he was ever elected). So why are trans people not allowed to have personal freedom, and how many terms has he served?
