  • I think Shinji being kinda pathetic compared to other child soldiers in shonen anime is something that people have a hard time wrapping their head around.

I heard something similar before, but I think it’s less him being “pathetic” and more the fact that Shinji is a vulnerable male protagonist, and that clearly upsets the cis hetero dudes that comprise such a big part of the anime watchers worldwide. Shinji breaks quite a few expectations of male protags and so he becomes an easy target.

Like I find it odd that a common theme in the most popular animes is that an early-teenager saving the world through some enormous power bestowed upon them. Not only this but many many adults enjoy this theme without a hint of criticism. I relate to Shinji a lot more than the protagonists from something like Naruto or Hero Academia (most cringe anime of all time).

I 100% agree that it is odd, but it makes sense, it’s just pure ideology. Coming of age stories about these powerful hero individuals that through their own hard work and merit are able to achieve anything they want and save the world are perfect for maintaining the grip of liberal ideology in the imaginary of the young people that are gonna watch these shows.

That’s why I think shows like Dungeon Meshi are important and so refreshing. It shows a group of people that all matters and have to work together to achieve their objective. It’s a story where it’s clear from the get go that everyone in the group is unique, important and have their own role to fill. It’s truly amazing. I could say the same of Gurren Lagann to, to some extent, tho that does have a more clear cut protagonist.

  • You’re not weak for finding out what your limitations are, comrade. Everyone is different and have their own tolerances and limitations. Being vulnerable to yourself and acknowledging that is not weakness. And while yes, the Palestinians have it way rougher right now, having to do anything they can to survive an ongoing genocide, that does not mean your own difficulties and limitations are not important too, you probably live worlds apart from them and your life is also going on.

I think the best course of action would be to try to hold on a little longer there and at the same time try to contact a mental health professional. That way you could still try to be in your current job a little longer to see how things go while also seeking the help you need right now.

And like another comrade already told you, if the place is so toxic and you’re the only counter to that, your presence there matters a lot. You don’t need to be confrontational of them, as that can create animosity between you and the other workers, but being able to listen, assert your position and stand your ground when needed, could be the change they need to be able to pierce the veil of ideology they are clearly immersed in.

  • It’s been a while since I watched it, so my memory of it is a bit hazy, but I 120% empatize with Shinji, while I only saw others hating on him. He’s the only character I unironically say it’s literally me.

I tend think that Eva’s message is much more personal than trying to comprehend it’s plot. That is, I think that different people can extract different meaning from it.

To me Evangelion is about comprehending you own fears, desires and limitations in a world that not only suppresses and neglects your emotions and needs, but that also expects and demands you to act and participate in ways that you may not be fit to do. Shinji is the perfect encapsulation of that, he’s has so many fears and issues that he barely functions most of the time, specially when put into stressful situations. Yet, when someone like Kaworu shows up, someone that truly cares for him and that tries to understand and be there for him, it’s the only time Shinji feels safe, happy and even feels attraction to.

But that’s not all, the show also talks a lot about human relationships in general and how it affects us. It’s like you said, every character have their own issues, issues these that dictates who they are and how they act and talk all while still wanting to be loved and understood, but always fearing that connection, always fearing to let someone get too close. You haven’t mentioned the Rebuild movies, so I’ll assume you didn’t see it and avoid spoiling it, but I do think this side of Eva is more fleshed out in the movies, specially on the last one. To me it’s like the show is screaming at us to be more human, to form more meaningful connections, to be able to be vulnerable and to care for each other more. And while the original anime have a much more bleak and depressing tone, the movies are much more hopeful, not only one complements the other, but like its a response to the each other’s tone.

I would need to rewatch Evangelion to properly expand on anything I said, but this has been the feeling and messaging that have stuck with me ever since I watched it. Also, KawoShin is the cutest thing ever, lol.

  • You didn’t say he ever claimed to be a fascist, but speaking from an outside perspective he sounds just like that without the self-label. The reason I say that is because when I was still a lib that knew jack shit of politics, my only friend group had fascists in it, the kind that will call themselves fascists without hesitation, but that are all too much of a coward to do anything. Still they would say basically everything you described in here, and even worse stuff, antisemitism was a big one among them.

When I became increasingly aware of what being a fascist actually meant and started to see through them, instead of cutting it right away I naively tried my best to change them, not realizing that was impossible. I still hate that I didn’t leave that group sooner. Being an autistic, social anxious and introverted person, I clung to the group from fear of ever feeling lonely.

I’m only now realizing how much that group fucked me up mentally and it fucking sucks.

Nowadays, while I do feel lonely, most people around me are just libs that know little or close to nothing of politics but that are all well-meaning people. My attempts at politicizing and bringing class consciousness to them have met only some success, but I’m learning along the way and I’m sure one day I’ll be able to connect better with them on that front. Most of the time I can’t even bring myself to say what I want, probably because of the way I had to act around the old group, and when I actually do say what I want, it’s like my body wants to shut down, so it’s really hard. Luckily I have a good psychologist that is slowly helping me with this.

I do want to say tho, please prioritize your well-being. As much as I completely agree with you wanting to say how much you despise Tony to his face when you leave, weight in if it is safe to do so when the time comes.

  • What video games have you played recently?

Recently I played a little bit of Street Fighter 6 and finally got back to playing Breath of the Wild. It’s been a while since I last played it a month or so ago, so I’m still picking up pace, but I think I’m finally ready to continue playing it, I’m still very early but every second I remember playing it have been just an absolute joy, so I hope I continue it. I have also started playing Demon’s Souls for the first time (second really, but I didn’t go far the first time). Just beat the spider boss, it’s cool so far.

What are your favorite video game genres?

Souls games. Though also honorable mention to roguelikes too. I haven’t played a bunch of them actually, but The Binding of Isaac (this one I have played A LOT) and Hades are both amazing.

Are there any live-service games, such as Fallout 76, that you’re currently playing? Anything like Helldivers 2 or any other multiplayer games?

Not really, have been a while since I played a live service game. The last one I played would be League of Legends, but not only have I been playing it less and less for the last 3 or so years, I can’t even play it anymore since Riot started using Vanguard in League because I use Linux, so fuck them.

I’m feeling the itch to start playing Warframe again tho. I’ll probably just do some of the questlines that dropped since I stopped playing. I think I stop right before before The New War came out.

  • Some context for anyone wondering: this was absolutely preventable. The governor of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite, knew this happens at this time of the year but not only did he not do anything, the investment in preventing this was basically null. A flood also happened last year and he did nothing too.

One of the rivers rose up to 30 meters this time.

After the flood this time around he resorted to Twitter to beg president Lula for help, which is absolutely weird and pathetic to do. Not only that, but now he is asking for donations to the state to help people. This could have been prevented or at the very least mitigated if there was proper funding.

Hopefully there is a lot of groups there helping like MTST and people from all over the country are donating to different groups to help those in need right now.

My heart goes out to everyone suffering because of the flooding right now, the number of desperate people I’m seeing on Twitter sharing pictures of people missing after the flood is absolutely devastating.

Fuck Eduardo Leite and fuck capitalism.

  • Yeah, as a neurodivergent person too, I also faced bullying and it was fucking horrible.

I can see bullying still being an issue on the first generation of people living in a socialist society, but as the individualistic ideology starts fading in favor of a more collective one, it will probably become much less of an issue.

That being said, it’s probably a good idea for said society to actually teach people how to be parents, teach professionals how to deal with bullying at school, etc. I always found weird how school never teaches kids this stuff in my country. If we learned at some point in the educational system how to parent, it would probably lead to a much healthier family relationships in general on society.

There’s also other stuff that can and should be done, like teaching about neurodivergent people, about limits, respect, empathy, etc.

One thing is for certain tho, I cannot see bullying stopping under capitalism.

CW: bullying case that lead to death

Just recently a 13 year old autistic boy died from health complications after being physically bullied in a school in the state of São Paulo here in Brasil and not receiving the proper medical care after being dismissed multiple times by medical professionals that only prescribed some medication. There are videos of the kid crying in pain and having difficulty breathing. This case is utterly fucking revolting and shows how deep bullying is ingrained in our society, specially since the school knew and did absolutely nothing, there are reports of parents contacting the directors on multiple occasions about bullying happening in that school, and nothing ever happened. The toilet he was beaten in was called “the toilet of death” for fuck’s sake.

  • That’s the thing, you identified an issue, we constantly hear bad and scary stuff about China all the time, that’s western propaganda trying to turn China into the enemy so whatever the west, mainly the US, wants to do, becomes justifiable.

You don’t need to live there to know, at least partiatly, the reality of what goes on in the country nor it’s international relations. I’m not from the US, but I do know all those things I just cited in my last comment. All you need are good sources. You can start by studying how China handles its international relations. You’ll quickly realize that China doesn’t threat, embargo or invade other countries.

If you are genuinely interested you can learn a lot by visiting Lemmygrad and Hexbear, there are communities there to ask for information, and as long as you’re wanting to learn, you will be welcomed.

Also, Xi Jinping is not insane at all like the media likes to portray him. The statement is too broad for me to tackle any specific thing, tho.

I don’t think China cares about human rights very much. And I would not be surprised if people gets killed and made to disappear if they are inconvenient.

Again, very broad statement, what human rights and what you mean by this? This probably comes from more propaganda led disinformation.

Also, China is a massive country with 1.4 billion people. Do you really think we wouldn’t have proof of people being repressed, killed and disappearing? The people there aren’t isolated from the internet, they can access beyond the restrictions easily with VPNs which are common, it would be easy to show this stuff to the rest of the world.

Protests happen all the time in China and people critique the government, just like basically any other country.

If you want the perspective of a foreigner living there, I recommend the youtube channel Felipe Durante, he speaks Portuguese but the auto translate on youtube should be good enough, at least for english.

  • Fucking hell. This isn’t an opinion, it’s a fact that the US is the enemy of the world. The US funds coups, destabilize, install military dictatorships, invades and bombs countries and it’s the only country in the world to drop a nuclear bomb on people, and THEY DID IT TWICE.

Stop making “wHaT iFs” in your head and actually look at the reality of what China does. It’s not even comparable.

  • What video games have you played recently?

Last time I think I said I was playing Lies of P, Elden Ring, Sekiro, Hollow Knight and Dark Souls III. Out of these I have finished Lies of P and started NG+, my plan is to get all achievements, but I haven’t played in a week, I hope to get back to it soon. For the others same thing, but more like 2 weeks without playing.

Other than that I got the platinum in Die in the Dungeon: Origins. Also, I started a new Bloodborne run and it’s the second time I actually play for real, I basically finished everything in the main game but the final boss. Right now I’m doing the DLC for the first time since on my first run, 4 years ago, I didn’t do it because I heard it was hard and waited until the end to do it, found out the worst way that killing the last boss throws you into NG+ automatically like DS1.

I’m also giving Chalice Dungeons a proper chance this time, since on my first playthrough I didn’t care about them. I gotta say, they are fun, albeit a bit repetitive, and the worst part is how separate it is from the rest of the game. The way Elden Ring tackled this is infinitely better by having it integrated into the world, it feels like just a detour for exploration instead of a chore like in BB.

Unfortunately I’m dumb and thought there was 6 depths instead of 5 and ended overleveling because of that, doesn’t help that the dungeons give you a shit ton of echoes, making you think that you need to keep leveling up. Right now I’m Blood Level 112 still on NG and while Dungeons get tough sometimes, the DLC is challenging, but the bosses are too easy at this level, I just beat Lady Maria first try and felt disappointed because of it. :(

I’ll have to play again to get the last ending for the platinum, so I’ll probably just stop leveling up and do NG+ on this level and see how hard the DLC is supposed to be since I should be around a good level already for doing it there.

What games coming out in 2024 are you most anticipating? Or games that are coming out sometime in the future?

Cuban indie game, Saviorless, that launched recently looks interesting, I want to give it a try sometime in the future. Other than that, Hades II, No Rest for the Wicked and Elden Ring’s DLC.
