They’re basically choose your own adventure books where holding your thumb on the previous page is central to the plot. If you can, play 999 on a physical DS. You really got have the console in your hands for the best experience, but emulation is mostly alright too. Just not the steam version because it absolutely butchers the story - it rewrites the entire script horrendously to adapt it to one screen.

The gameplay of Tactics Ogre isn’t similar to Ogre Battle even though they’re in the same franchise. The former is like Final Fantasy Tactics and Triangle Strategy while the latter is like Unicorn Overlord.

The gameplay is the same as Ogre Battle, a franchise that has been dead for decades until now. I played Unicorn Overlord’s demo and didn’t really get it. It’s a really technical autobattler with really tropey characters. I was bored when I wasn’t confused

And I agree, this game really grew on me too! I thought the main characters were tropey at first but they’ve endeared themselves to me since. I can overlook all the game’s jank because the boys are just that precious. I spent two hours running around in circles with them with illegible text and I’d do it again.
Ah, by magic abilities I mean the special powers he gets from his royal bloodline. In Spanish it’s called the gift of Lux and every related skill has that moniker: warping is called Lux Impetus, perfect guards are called Lux Custodia, the thing that distracts enemies is called Lux Fatua, etc.
I’m not sure what spells are called in either language because I never bothered to craft any of them.
