Careful calling those regimes authoritarian. Hexbears like to attack this point by assigning a slightly different definition to authoritarian and then either (a) claim that all governments are “authoritarian” or (b) blame liberals for using this word to demonize socialist states. I once saw someone cite https://en.prolewiki.org/wiki/Authoritarianism to “prove” that those states are not authoritarian.

Yeah, the Chinese government is totally very democratic and is receptive to the criticism of its citizens! They never censor words and topics they don’t like on their social media platforms!

I just read through the article from the Washington Post you linked. That really is bad and I believe that the Trump government should not have treated the (although illegal) immigrants. The grim appearance of that facility really isn’t something that the immigrants should have faced when they set foot on the US. However, compare that to the situation in Xinjiang. Here is an opinion post from the Washington Post. What China is doing to its Uyghurs is genocide. Not that it justifies anything that the US have done to its immigrants, but in comparison what the US is doing seem pretty mild.

This is not like that. The ROC government did not “massacre everyone there.” It did call itself the rightful government of the entire China for several decades, but it has since then moved on.

Is that a bad thing? In your hypothetical situation, Chinese people should be happy about their government selling weaponry to Texas, and the Americans should not support their sale of weaponry. To compare this to the real world scenario, Chinese people should feel angry about this and Americans should feel good. I don’t really get the point you’re trying to convey with your analogy.

Or check out this post where the admins of lemm.ee asked for the users’ opinions of whether to defederate from hexbear.net. There are 1884 comments. (There was once more than 1900 comments, but I guess the mods removed some.)

100% agree that they are trolls. They flood any China news posts (that’s not on lemmy.world) with a truckload of pro-China comments, taking advantage of the fact that a sizeable portion of Lemmy users won’t be able to see and downvote them. Whenever someone replies to them with well-thought-out arguments supporting “the western authoritarians,” half of them replies with huge and ugly emojis, while the other half parrots more Chinese propaganda (that actually sound well-written if you disregard the fact that China is an oppressive regime).
