The article is saying “before” as in “before the changes that happened because of COVID”. I don’t know when the inflection point was where we shifted to shit wages for traditionally tipped jobs, but it was many many years ago. When COVID hit we were not giving living wages to servers.
The movie, despite being unrelentingly bleak, actually isn’t quite as soul crushing as the book. At least it wasn’t for me.

I think because it’s a pretty gross mischaracterization of the demographic? Usually hyperbole is used for effect to more emphatically illustrate a generally true or accepted point.
The number of Americans who use nightly sleep aids is extremely low. Like, a vast vast majority of people never take them. I don’t know anyone who regularly takes them, and honestly I don’t know many who take them even occasionally.
So this meme uses hyperbole to drive home the idea that Americans have a pill problem regarding sleep aids and no one in Europe does. I have no idea how the numbers shake out in Europe but I can say in America it is not as characterized. So it’s less hyperbole (exaggeration of a fact) and more like a lie.
Came here to say this one. It’s been ~30 years and there still isn’t another game that quite hits in the same way. The perfect combination of jrpg, weirdness, emotion, humor, horror/dread, and lightheartedness. Earthbound has it all.

I have to admit though I am visiting for game threads now that the NFL has started up. Sports is non-existent on Lemmy. I’m participating in the communities for my teams, but there’s like half a dozen of us in each one. It just isn’t the same thing and I realized that dicking around in comment sections is a big part of how I enjoy sports these days.
They’re still not getting content from me, I’m not going to use their app. But it’s hard to keep completely away when there is simply nothing even closer on lemmy or anywhere else.

The 2023 pic is beautiful and looks really nice. But if we’re comparing in good faith, it’s also pretty obvious that the 2022 photo was taken in early spring when nothing is growing.

I really love this web comic. I’m very unsure how it will translate to anything beyond its current scope, which is essentially translation of individual “moments” into literal language. The shtick doesn’t have a chance to get old when it’s never a situation longer than like 6 panels. But I’m curious enough to be mildly interested.

Yeah I agree. Arguably reddit isn’t even mainstream, and it is exponentially larger than Lemmy now and will remain so for the foreseeable future.

Worthwhile thread, but I also feel like by definition true wireless buds cannot be BIFL sadly. I don’t think a single model from any manufacturer has replaceable batteries or parts, so every single set will be ultimately disposable after a couple years.
