The Karen Border Guard Force (BGF) has announced a crackdown following the abduction of Chinese celebrities as forced labor for scam compounds in areas under its control on the Myanmar-Thai border.
The announcement came during an emergency meeting in Karen State’s Myawaddy on Wednesday between the BGF, the Democratic Karen Benevolent Army (DKBA), and local Chinese businessmen.
BGF isn’t the only ones running the scam centers on Myanmar border areas it controls. Other ethnic insurgents are involved in these operations as well. The “Chinese businessmen” are basically Chinese crime syndicates who have paid these ethnic insurgents to build and operate the scam centers, casinos and brothels on Myanmar’s borders with China and Thailand.
The ones on Thai border exist with the acquiescence of Thai authorities as the illegal activities of Burmese insurgents does generate significant economic returns for Thailand, including tourism as “golden triangle” has been used to promote tourism to Northern Thailand. However Thais will not do so at a cost to its tourism industry as the story of Chinese actor’s abduction has made huge news in China endangering Chinese tourism to Thailand. We’ve seen in a cabinet level meeting in Thailand regarding this matter. Karen BGF held this meeting to draw a line for the Chinese crime syndicates on what they can and can’t do.
So nothing will change except they will be more careful about creating waves?
