Live in an apartment, I own the unit I live in.
First the people below us threatened to sue us for their heat bills, claiming their “baby got cold”, meanwhile I’m indoors in a fucking t-shirt. Put a fucking blanket on it then. Because I opened my own windows in my own apartment for what they deemed was “too long”.
I would also sometimes open the window on my floor of the stairwell, for circulation cause people’s disgusting smells enter the hallway (revolting cooking, extremely strong air freshener)…
Multiple people complained that it created a “draft” and that their kids were cold.
Then it got narrowed down to only ventilating when the toxic cleaning people came to use their insanely strong chemicals that I’m allergic to.
Well that was phased out too since people complained about it getting “cold” and the “draft” so now our building doesn’t get aired out after it’s entirely cleaned with toxic fumes.
NOW THE ONLY SAVING GRACE I HAVE is that I can leave the door to our floor open, so that at least the really strong smells on our little landing can diffuse outwards onto the stairwell instead of entering my apartment.
Well the person living across me had taught their kid to say “close the doors close the doors!!!” every fucking time it goes outside with the “grandma” who gives me the dirtiest deadest look I’ve ever fucking seen in my life every time I see her.
And now I can’t say jack shit about it because “oh but our kid said it that’s why we did it”
I feel like these peoples life goal is to torment me. They’re also aware I have allergies and don’t give a shit.
Maybe time to make one of those furnace filter + box fan air purifiers. It should help with the scents and any dust.
If its one person complaining, yes maybe they are overreacting. If its multiple people complaining, the odds that you are at fault in this increase exponentially.
I doubt you share ventilation with neighbors. Buy some high density foam or search online for a door sealing kit of some kind which fills in the clearly enormous gaps between your door and its frame so that what you do doesn’t effect neighbors, and what they do doesn’t effect you. Don’t fuck with common area windows or doors.

In general I agree. However, indoor air pollution is a thing. The main thing I’d be concerned with is the use of strong cleaning chemicals in an unventilated area. Other considerations are gas leaks and carbon monoxide build-ups. It’s possible that there’s a real danger here, and the other tenants just aren’t familiar with it. The parents might be convinced about the possible danger to their kids if the facts were looked up and presented to them.
It sounds like you have to make do. Community areas are managed by the community, so the stairwell window is right out. Same with the door. Open the window in your unit, get a fan and blow air in from the outside to combat the smells. If that’s too much for the rest, they should complain to the landlord about how poorly sealed their doors are and the paper thin insulation.

Fuck them at that point. It’s your window. The community can gripe about the community door/window, but not yours. If it’s causing such an issue, that’s on the building owner/builder at that point.
No one can say anything about your own apartment windows but most of your post is about the common areas and 100% your neighbors have a say in that.

certainly but I did not hear about all the neighbors agreeing with you but just the many that do not. Is it you against the complex or are other folks getting nasty looks from kids about the window.

Yeah so 4 people care about it and the rest don’t want to get involved. Could be that the others are to far from or don’t pass the area enough to care wereas the four closest units care about it. But yeah 3 to 1 it should go with the 3. Its a common space. Its very possible that the massive effect you see smell wise is no big deal to others and the slight effect you see temperature wise is massive for them. Anyway keep your own units windows wide open as you want as that is your unit.
