If I were God, here’s how the afterlife would work:
Upon dying, each person would stand before me. I would ask them to describe their ideal society, telling them that they will spend eternity on the top rung of it. After they have finished describing their society, I create it exactly as they described, but they spend eternity on the bottom rung instead (maybe they get to try again in a millennium or so).

I do think it is a byproduct of capitalism. Kindness doesn’t make profit, so it is discouraged, even if it is “officially” seen as a good virtue by people, a lot of people love the anime villain/toddler logic of “It doesn’t benefit me personally, so I view it as weakness.”

My high school had the special education students clean the lunch room and take out the garbage etc, supposedly to prepare them for jobs they could do, so they were sort of on this trend. This was the more ‘progressive’ school in the area as well, in a blue state.
Preparing them to work for inadequate compensation since that’s legal for disabled people?
