    This is called context collapse:

Context collapse or “the flattening of multiple audiences into a single context[1] is a term arising out of the study of human interaction on the internet, especially within social media.[2]Context collapse “generally occurs when a surfeit of different audiences occupy the same space, and a piece of information intended for one audience finds its way to another” with that new audience’s reaction being uncharitable and highly negative for failing to understand the original context.[3]

Seems interrelated with butwhataboutism and appeal to hypocrisy. Basically redirecting the conversation to something unrelated to make the original speaker look bad.

Me five seconds ago when someone popped into my timeline to say they hate my favorite programming language

And their profile said “please let me know if I can be nicer or do anything better”

And so I clicked back and forth and thought real hard and blocked them cause I had about enough Internet for a lifetime and I’m going to spend my energy being nice in person I think

I saw a TikTok of someone being held in airport jail and happy that they at least gave them some Burger King. Someone left a comment, “aren’t we supposed to be boycotting BK though?” I actively felt like I was going insane reading that

    “Even Gaza?”

    “Well, no.”

    “So you’re antiemetic?”

    “No, I…”

    “Support genocide, got it.”

    “Can I see your manager?”

“You’re assuming I’m not the manager because I’m black?”

    “You’re not black.”

    “That’s unbelievably racist.”

“Think I’ll just get a container to go.”

“Typical millennial killing the restaurant industry, and strangling the earth with plastic pollution as well.”

There it is, in a nutshell.

(Yes, I’m aware this offensive to people with nut allergies. I just don’t care.)

You say that, but there is a historical basis to making a point out of it

For example, martial rape wasn’t considered rape or even sexual assault for a long time. And many people might also take someone not saying no as implicit consent, which is not necessarily the case

It can be a bit more nuanced than it may initially seem, in the sense that like, there can be different understandings of consent

Buuuut of course I don’t know the context of your conversation

Great good faith response to my comment, for sure

I think you underestimate how many people might not have a complete understanding of consent, and just dismissing it outright like this isn’t… as productive as you might think it is

          Other guy: rape is bad

This guy: many people don’t really understand what rape is

You: ah yes these are the same

You said people shouldn’t rape people who are likely to kill their rapist, and someone replied that people shouldn’t rape anyone period and they even said they weren’t trying to be pedantic. I think you’re looking too far into this. They weren’t necessarily scolding you. Could’ve just been a joke. Same thing here. Someone is just politely replying and discussing. They’re not attacking you.

I just don’t care. If you read the whole thing, somebody said, “Does anything in the title relate to the crime?” or something to the gist. I said, “No.” summed up the high points, and then said, “Unless it’s related to, ‘Don’t rape someone ex military or sometimes they’ll blow your brains out.’”

It wasn’t necessary to provide a lecture about what rape is. It wasn’t relevant. This website is so full of pedantic dickheads, I’m frankly amazed reddit has any left.
