Uhh, Eric Adams was also black. Just sayin’.
Maybe the deciding factor is class rather than race?
Nah, couldn’t be it. It’s not as if they would stand to benefit from us poors’ constant infighting.
The fear is these city run grocery stores may prove to be useful and popular and people elsewhere would start demanding them. And we can’t have the peasants giving money to the government rather than the owner of Krogers.
Speaking of Trump, you’d think Fox News would go back to saying the word “uncertainty” every 13 seconds like they did during the whole Obama administration. But apparently not.
I just don’t understand how to shake people out of apathy. By scores of metrics, America is doing terribly compared to other Western democracies, and the proof is ready and evident. But Americans just don’t care, “who is kamala harris” was trending on google on election day.
Then add all that on top of disinformed Americans that will fight to keep their chains.
If you want to see how to shake people out of apathy, look no further than the subject of this post. The Mamdani campaign might not be perfect, but it’s exactly the kind of direction we can head if we work together. People were most certainly shaken out of apathy to deliver this important win.
I don’t know, I thought the same thing about Bernie in 2020 but everyone went Biden instead. I hope this goes well and is replicated across the nation, but then I remember that “do good for everyone” isn’t a common goal.
That’s just an election though. I’m talking about building a movement. This is how it happens. Bernie was obviously the correct choice in terms of the two seconds it takes to vote, just like Biden and Harris were in the generals following, but the movement is built on the excitement of breaking out of the apathy of normal corporate politics.
I’m just saying take a look at what happens when someone who actually represents the interests of the people puts together a real movement based campaign. It breaks apathy.
This is somehow the fault of the democrats i refused to vote for
-people on lemmy
If leftists are that make-or-break then maybe the DNC shouldn’t treat us as though we are irrelevant. And if we are irrelevant, then people can stop blaming us for losing elections.
Schrodinger’s leftist: simultaneously powerful enough to completely tank national elections and so insignificant that their demands can be dismissed out of hand.
the us military has government run grocery stores btw and the world hasnt ended
You shouldn’t be allowed to do things if you’re this fuckin stupid. What does this even mean? How the fuck does Soviet Russia impact your decision to buy groceries?
I hear you, but I think state-run liquor stores are just a holdover from Prohibition mentality, not to make sure booze is affordable for the poor.
The point is that the world doesn’t end when the government sells stuff.
Oh I agree, and I love Mamdani’s ideas. I just think state-run liquor stores aren’t a great parallel because they come with issues food stores don’t.
I’m from the US so I don’t understand what issues might be there if govt operates food stores?
What’s the grocery store idea? Open them in food deserts?
Exactly. The big chains don’t want to come there, this is providing stimulus for the mom and pop stores that would.
Yes, starting with a pilot program that puts one store in each borough and growing from there.
The Democratic Party establishment would prefre 8 more years of Trump, over losing control of the party to people like Zohran Mamdani.
Trump won A SECOND TERM after his ineptitude during his first exactly because of that.
To try to win against an outright Fascist they were only willing to go as far cosying up to the Cheney family.
Kindly? No.
They can go fuck themselves with a spiked mace and pour hot sauce over the wounds it creates.
The people freaking out over this, but not over the literal forming of a dictatorship are absolute scum.
Old White Guy: “We’re doing more capitalism. You will live in the pod and eat the bugs and own nothing and like it. Nothing will fundamentally change.”
Young Arab Guy: “We’re going to try to make cost of living go down at the expense of private profits and turn NYC into a place where you don’t need to be a millionaire to live well.”
I mean, this isn’t an issue of being “Twice as Good”. It’s an issue of being diametrically opposed to the ruling class.
Mamdani isn’t Arab; he’s Indian. A quarter of the world would be offended by the implication these two groups are the same.
I thought he was from Uganda lol I wouldn’t have called him arab or indian
He’s Ugandan-born but both his parents are Indian and he identifies as Indian-American.
Ah okay thanks
Wouldn’t be offended necessarily. He’s Muslim and South Asian (parents are Gujurati and Punjabi) so it’s easy to think that. We need to offer grace to people outside of our ingroup. They’re going to know less and that’s ok. Just like I don’t know if O’Keefe is Irish, Scottish or Potato.
He’s not an Arab.
Conflating being a Muslim with being Arabian is a good habit to break.
Absolutely agree. Especially since the majority of the world’s Muslims (60%) live in the Asia-Pacific region.
The biggest Muslim country in the World is Indonesia.
