Just ended up getting the most pretentious Frenchie in my DMs all because he wanted to debate etymology with me. Here are some banger quotes:

[CW: Cringe, Brief Mention of French's Horrible History]

Him: “Etymology is the logical root of words. Without it, language becomes arbitrary, malleable, stripped of meaning. That’s exactly what the system wants: to twist words in order to twist thought. Newspeak begins here—when we forget that freedom, justice, or authority have precise, inherited, rooted meanings. To know etymology is to resist. It is to think clearly with words that still carry truth.”

Him: “Every word carries historically constructed semantic content. Its etymology reveals not only its linguistic origin, but also the primary intention behind its use. For example, education comes from the Latin educere, « to bring out, to raise » a dynamic toward autonomy. If we redefine this word to designate simple conditioning or passive transmission, we negate this fundamental orientation. The word then ceases to designate what it designated. This creates a short-circuit of meaning.”

Me: “No, this is not true. Etymology does not set rules. Like I said, please acknowledge the fact that you have to concede that ‘girl’ is gender-neutral in this case. You don’t have to do a whole critical analysis here—it really is not that deep.”

Him: “We don’t have gender neutrality in French. In German, they have feminine, masculine, and neuter.”

Me: “Okay, but that’s not relevant to the fact that we say ‘girl’ in English to mean ‘female child’ specifically despite it etymologically descending from a gender-neutral term”

Him: “So we can write anything arbitrarily and interpret words without foundation. Worse, we can lose words to ideologies”

Me: “Strawman argument. I said that words are defined by how they are used, not that you can use ‘toaster’ to mean ‘tree.’ My argument is that etymology doesn’t prescriptively dictate the meaning of a word, and there are many examples of this.”

    Closed out with this:

Him: “I am not responsible for the lexical poverty of English and your difficulty in accepting that Latin words are relevant and based on implacable logic. Etymology is a major tool against obscurantism. Extremely so in France, where the system is violent in its distortion and dilution of words. It is a tool. An empirical DNA.”

Me: “The system is violent in its distortion and dilution of words? Reminds me of how your people were violent to mine when they enslaved them. Now fuck off.”

    and then I blocked.

And how did this conversation start? Someone used the term “principle” instead of “doctrine” (in a particular context) in an Instagram story I shared, and he replied to it with, “It’s a ‘doctrine.’ Not a principle!”

    I shit you not. 🙄

Wait wait wait…there’s actually people who support the French trying to stop French from changing because the youth was using too much slang? That wasn’t an elaborate bit? LOL deeply unserious language.

I only watch the other way because I love seeing America’s being put in their place. It still has the weird “look [foreign country] is so foreign” feel to it but with the benefit of not being in America. The scariest thing is how they seem to never run out of participants.

You see the clip of Ed going to the Philippines and he says “I’m going to this place called ‘Manila.’ It’s a city somewhere. You heard of it?”

It’s only one of the largest cities in the world, Ed. Only recently has it left the top 10. It’s like that scene in Indiana Jones of the white British guy wandering around Egypt after Dr. Jones tells the bad guys his buddy will blend right in.

My favorite part is when the American wants to go back to the US because it’s too foreign to them but the non-American is like “what are you talking about this is paradise to me”. So suddenly leaving your home and everything you know isn’t fun huh?

            • My favorite part is when the American wants to go back to the US because it’s too foreign to them

What? Philippines is one of the Americanized countries in the world and he can’t stand it being foreign. I’d bet my ass he’d drown in 3 inches of water without trying.

Anglo America’s are weak af. They spend a day in a house without a water heater or half the water pressue and they would swear they spent a night in guantanamo.

There’s another couple where the groom-to-be is from Nigeria and his fiancee, a white woman, goes to meet him for the first time. He shows her how they bathe at his house, which is to fill a bucket with hot water, soap yourself up with that, then rinse off with the shower running, rather than letting the water run the whole time you’re in there. Makes sense, right? Especially when you’re in a house with like 4 adults and you’re on a limited budget with a small water tank.

With the look on her face, you’d think he told her to go bathe naked in the river using only a rock to scrub with and no soap.

The one that makes me laugh is anfisa. Lol she is… Yeah no hell no but at the same time he lied about affording the millionaire lifestyle so thats a hell he created. At the end he ended up busted for drugs. People say they watch these shows for entertainment but the brainrot influence has a way of creeping in slowly i-cant

One couple had a domestic abuse issue. But honestly I’d be surprised if all of em don’t end up with that.

Sometimes you really do know some on here are too online, western(ized) and propagandized. It becomes immediately obvious through their mannerisms and speech patterns. Especially when it comes to anti-imperialist actors internationally.

I would like to type so much - but I know it won’t help so I am exhibiting some self-control.

Always thinking back to the fact that someone who I’m on good terms with and still talk to these days posted this on social media:

CW: Whte Lberal Being a Whte Lberal

“Genuine anti-racism doesn’t make exceptions. If your anti-racism includes demonizing white people, it’s not anti-racism. It’s just racism.”

Looks like a global war is more likely to break out and economic collapse. If that happens and I go missing indefinitely it’s because I decided to live with the indigenous permanently lol

one of the accounts that has been rising since the protests in LA is this Mexican chud that think only the anglos are capable of settler colonialism

evidence even latinos are capable of having brain worms

  • There’s nothing left to explain, I don’t need to tell white people anything anymore, there’s genocides going on supported by their governments, it’s so obvious and so clear, you’re an enemy if you don’t recognize it.

White people when my freeform dreadlocks were in the earliest phases: “Have you considered combing your nappy ass hair?”

White people when my freeform dreadlocks are longer and mature: “OMG, WAOW. SO COOL! IT’S LIKE BOB MARLEY! THAT’S SO EXOTIC! OMG!”

    I swear to fucking God.
