When they did this with the Falcon 9, it took several flights to get a landing without significant damage to the drone ship, the booster, or both. Pretty impressive that they got it to work right out of the gate with the Super Heavy Booster

The amount you can learn by actually putting everything together is just fundamentally necessary to make sure these complex systems work.
