I was going by that calculation … the little girl who is now 50 years old would now have a daughter old enough to be the same age as the woman peeling potatoes in this picture

So I don’t know if I missed it, but what’s Israel’s justification for attacking another sovereign country? And I saw they were talking about putting settlers there? Aren’t they essentially doing what Russia is doing to Ukraine? Why isn’t the UN coming down on them?

Lebanon, along with other states like Jordan, was flooded by Palestinian refugees after 1948 and then the 6 day war and other Arab states sent weapons because syria and Israel considers it a proxy war (after syria got spanked in the YKW).

The lebanese maronite Christians lived on the rich north/sest side (Beirut was once called the Paris of the middle east) while the south/east side (over the mountains) were incredibly poor shia Arab Muslims. The Syrians armed them and told them to attack the west, which they did, and won, which lead to half a decade of civil war that…vaguely settled when Israel invaded and occupied them from 85 to 2000.

Every now and then hezbollah in the south attacks Israel with rockets and such, Israel responds by bombing or even invading, which doesn’t really work well for anybody.

It’s a disaster that nobody will fix, but it’s the same problem as everywhere else, poor rural folk are angry and jealous of rich urban folk who don’t care about them and hold them in comtempt for being backwards, we have the same thing in America.

I look forward to being lectured by people who read second-hand propaganda about how this is all bullshit and actually the US specifically did… something that caused decades of war.

It didn’t even occur to me that people were firing rockets, etc, from Lebanon into Israel. Duh. That makes a lot of sense, and I just assumed they fired from Gaza and so forth. Well today I learned.

Hopefully your actually pertinent information will continue to be upvoted. Thank you!

Hezbollah, a terrorist group in Lebanon, has been trading fire over the border with Israel for the past year. Israel claims that they’re definitely only invading Lebanon because Lebanon isn’t stopping Hezbollah (Lebanon, practically speaking, can’t, because Hezbollah is better armed than the nation’s actual military). In service to this very noble goal, Israel has been indiscriminately shelling residential areas, because as we all know, that’s how to defeat terrorist organizations.

Rather predictably, the Israeli ultraright has already begun salivating over the prospect of having another bleeding ulcer like Palestine to genocide and colonize; while the Israel right pretends that the ultraright doesn’t exist and they DEFINITELY aren’t thinking the exact same thing. Realistically speaking, Netanyahu, the Prime Minister of Israel, started this shit to have another crisis to hang onto power with, as, absent the war(s), he’s deeply unpopular.

The UN isn’t coming down on them because the UN is powerless and slow. They just got around to ‘expressing concern’ for their own peacekeepers that are being fired upon in Lebanon.

What I don’t get is why?

It’s not a particularly dense region of resources, nor is it a particularly enjoyable climate. Like at least Iraq had some oil or something, otherwise you get a desert. Yay. Desert. What are we going to do with more desert?

If you’re talking about the government in general, the answer is Zionism. Literally that. It’s not driven by any kind of logic any more than Nazis had logical reasons to enslave the Slavs for their 1000 year Reich. If you mean only Netanyahu, he needs to extend the war so he doesn’t go to prison over the shit he got up to before October 7th.

That would have to do with Isreal’s domestic politics and how invading these other countries somehow made the prime minister more popular. 🤦

Israel is a settler colonial state. It was founded by taking land from people who lived there. It’s whole founding philosophy and ethos is based on occupation and oppression and ethno supremacy. So basically, it’s the same as the Nazis.

There are certainly economic incentives and parts of the country are quite nice, but I think, at the end of the day, the core incentive for Netanyahu and his goons is just ethnic supremacism. “We must show these dirty foreigners who God has granted this land to”

Israel exists in a hostile neighborhood. It had to defend its existence several times. Israel itself is a very small country. It doesn’t have strategic depth, so can’t afford to give land in a war. That’s why Israel responds aggressively to attacks. It needs to deter further aggression.

There‘s no indiscriminate attack on Lebanon going on. Israel targets Hezbollah infrastructure and fighters specifically.

Hezbollah‘s goal in their program is the destruction of Israel. They are fundamentally opposed to peaceful coexistence. It’s in their own writings. That’s why they attack Israel any chance they get.

According to UNSC resolution 1701, Hezbollah should have left southern Lebanon and disarmed two decades ago. They didn’t, but instead built up their military infrastructure and armaments. Since October 8th 2023 Hezbollah has attacked Israel without rockets without pause. 100,000 Israelis fled the north of Israel to escape the rocket barrage since then. The Israeli government wants to enable their citizens to return to their homes and needs to destroy Hezbollah‘s military capabilities to achieve it.

Israel doesn’t want Lebanese territory. Otherwise they would have annexed or settled land during the previous occupation.

Hasbara: Public diplomacy in Israel refers to Israel’s efforts to communicate directly with citizens of other nations to inform and influence their perceptions, with the aim of garnering support or tolerance for the Israeli government’s strategic objectives. Historically, these efforts have evolved from being called “propaganda” by early Zionists (when the term was considered neutral), with Theodor Herzl advocating such activities in 1899, to the more contemporary Hebrew term “hasbara” introduced by Nahum Sokolow, which translates roughly to “explaining”. This communicative strategy seeks to justify actions and is considered reactive and event-driven.

                UN Peacekeepers? Hezbollah.

                Clearly marked journalists? Definitely Hezbollah.

Toddlers wandering around? Believe it or not, Hezbollah.

Hezbollah launches attacks from right next to UN troop bases. This is well documented. Civilians get hurt if military objectives are hidden among civilians. That is also well documented.

Sure there are also a few warcrimes and aggressive action.

I would prefer if this war hadn’t started in the first place.

Most moral army in the world, the IDF is just operating off the presumption that life is suffering and it’s a good thing to reduce suffering.
