the reddit liberals are gentrifiers to this lemmy digital neighborhood and they’re pushing out this original neighborhood’s tankie inhabitants with their sheer group size and i think that their chances at winning are almost the same as real-world gentrifiers.
but this neighorhood has architecture that sustains its intended tankie audience like anti-homeless architecture that pushes away the unhoused in an affluent neighborhood and that architecture is doing its job so effectively that the reddit refugees have started topics in their instance about how to remove the code that sustains this architecture from lemmy and are close to fully capturing lemmy code development process to enable those goals.
the fediverse’s tankie roots; upon which lemmy is built; can keep a leftist discourse alive despite anyone’s attempt to dominate, ban, block or defederate from it. taking those actions only serves to cut yourself and your users off from the main group chat that everyone else can see. none of those actions can prevent you from participating in the discourse anywhere in the fediverse and, by extension, the lemmyverse no matter how much they ban, block or defederate.
in time a huge majority of the reddit refugees will leave if they haven’t figured out how to fix their self imposed problems with the lemmyverse. when they do, they’ll discover that no previous reddit enshittification induced user diaspora has ever survived and they’ll have to either go back to reddit or switch to bluesky; where enshitification is already guaranteed and they’ll have to do this diaspora thing all over again.
the huge userbase bump and political inclinations of this particular diaspora lends itself well to giving the lemmyverse the biggest and best chance out of any of the user diasporas to survive and, if enough liberals end up sticking around, the lemmyverse will be enriched for it.
i think this is true for any leftist struggling to keep going in such seemingly hopeless odds: keep your eyes on the long term and you’ll see the changes that we need as a society to improve.
those reddit liberals believe in the same things; it’s just that they’re mostly americans and americans are heavily propagandized against leftists labels. once they see that leftists hold the same values they’ll come to understand that “tankie” is little more than a strawman used to manipulate them.
