Oops, this is some misinformation, friend. https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/rfk-wellness-farms/

Exaggerated claims designed to provoke a reaction, even in humorous contexts like this, make it harder for us to perceive and react to actual dangerous threats that might come our way. And we’re definitely going to need to have an accurate and truthful view of the world in the coming days.

It’s a good joke, it’s a great joke even, but even so, we shouldn’t spread misinformation.

If it’s fake news (and it is) then I have every right to say, “Get this fucking bullshit off my feed” (my actual response was quite a bit more measured than that). I shouldn’t have to be like, “Haha! Oh that’s so funny, you’re really smart and clever! Oh, but, fyi, that’s kinda misinformation, just so you know!”

Would you rather listen to the blunt truth or to a friendly lie? If it’s the latter, then that ought to be called out as well as the original point - falling for a fake news story is entirely excusable, but being unwilling to listen to criticism unless it’s phrased nicely and defanged is not.

Shit like this is part of why I use term “Blue MAGA,” because you’ll find the exact same mentality over there. The facts don’t matter, if you don’t demonstrate you’re one of us, we’ll write you off anything you say. Critical thought means listening to criticism, even if it’s, “antagonistic.”

Well I was trying to be simplistic but since you typed so much, the reason your message isnt received well is because you assume Ill intent by the OP, while the one getting up votes makes no assumptions about intent.

Technically theirs is more accurate because they are acknowledging they can’t know the original intent, while you are arguing that its obvious what their intent is.

No, I implied nothing. The other person went out of their way to assuage people that just because they were calling out misinformation didn’t mean they’re not on their side - I just stated facts without making any indication about what I thought of OP’s intent. Loyalty and tribalism come before truth. People posting false information have to be reassured that you think they’re great before you correct them. It’s ridiculous.

The Trump administration’s intention is to criminalize certain behavior with plausible deniability that amounts to nothing more than an excuse to put specific people on psychiatric meds whom they want to put in these proposed work camps, in work camps. While ‘labor’ or ‘profit’ might be involved, the essential function will be, if seen through successfully, simply to hurt those who they think they can, like all fascists.

Yes, I certainly think they’re going to try, considering they’ve literally and explicitly stated they’re going to create work camps, the flurry of promises of revenge, of unlawful deportation, and their history with shipping US citizens off without regard for silly things like ‘law’, ‘precedent’, or ‘rights’.

Do you think they’re not going to try literally exactly what they’ve said they’re going to do?

Not exactly. My ADHD has only one good use… I am amazing at dealing with worst case scenarios and in fact thrive in them. I will always find a way to do something, survive and enjoy it. I had more fun in Japan when I was broke after I lost my scholarship than I was before I did. I rode a busted old bike with flat tires everywhere, I found ways to scrounge for food, I survived odd of a bag of flour and snuck my mom into my dorm. I have no interest in normal day to day easy life. Put me in the wilderness and make me kill my food.

I mean, it’s RFK Jr. I doubt he would even be able to identify real organic fertilizers anyway. If he were to inspect a site and see fertilizers, even organic fertilizer in bags, he’s probably tell them to throw it out and just just rely on the unamended soil. He would then go home and eat over priced Whole Foods produce that may or may not be honest about the organic label.

The Mother Jones article presents this as a quote from RFK where he does use the word “farm”. The context of the article is a virtual “Latino town hall” event, so I assume that’s where he said the following:

I’m going to create these wellness farms where they can go to get off of illegal drugs, off of opiates, but also illegal drugs, other psychiatric drugs, if they want to, to get off of SSRIs, to get off of benzos, to get off of Adderall, and to spend time as much time as they need—three or four years if they need it—to learn to get reparented, to reconnect with communities.

As a person with ADHD, let me just volunteer the following information; the absolute last thing you want… the last thing you want is for a bunch of people with ADHD to be held on a boring farm. Without medication!

The phrase “herding cats” doesn’t even come close. And ADHD is often comorbid with sleep phase disorder, which means I’m 100% alert all night without the medication that helps me sleep! That gives me lots and lots of time to be a problem!

Yeah sorry should have been more clear I suppose. The narrative they’re trying to perpetuate is that nobody is ill and all of the prescription drugs are unnecessary, and that all the people taking medication for their illnesses really just want to be off of it but have no ability.

Realistically, yeah he’s going to build the camps, and then it’s a very short hop skip and a jump to court orders putting people there.

To be honest they should just do an opinion piece saying exactly what we know he’s going to do. We don’t need him to pretend that’s exactly what he said.

This is a pretty cool example of media bias distorting facts in order to cause kind of a Shiri’s Scissor scenario in the reader based on where they get their news. Liberal source gives an inaccurate, more interpretive story based on what is already known about the parties involved. I’d wager a more conservative source would just give a direct statement of what RFK said here, which sounds fairly reasonable if you have no bias against the man and his team. Discussing this point becomes incredibly controversial between the groups because we have opposing interpretations of the same event, and it’s difficult to come to any understanding without breaking many things down into smaller parts.

All this is to say I agree, it should have been an opinion piece. It’s dishonest as it is now and would only cause friction, confusion, and raised hackles. We know how troubled teen camps fail kids, and what happens when bad people have power over vulnerable people. The writing is on the wall, but it’s not clear for all of us. Be less inflammatory and more informative, is what I think news should be.
