Crunch crunch moistness mmm.
I think the thing which ruines salads for me previously is how frequently raw onions and tomatoes get added to them. Now that I took salads without those, turns out I like them. Also, all of the salads I liked had a grain addition (grain eater, please, no, not my salads!) which I think adds a lot. Salads are very nice: as long as they’re more than just tomatoes, bitter leaves and raw onion slices - this is an abomination, idk why so many places sell this.
I’d formulate the ideal salad something like this:
- green leaves (avoid too bitter ones) for green and crunch
- sauce to moisturize it
- a grain (the grains I had were white ones which don’t look or taste like rice - they were moist on their own and very pleasant to add)
- non-veg addition: e.g. falafel balls, nuts (e.g. walnuts), tiny toast cubes (“croutons”), tiny cheese cubes
Most has to be veg, but the addition of else is mandatory, especially the grain. Texture is such an important part of eating.
Enjoy your salads. :3
green leaves + vinegrette + nothing else = peak salad
The only valid opinion
tomatoes are a horrible salad addition IMO
onions are good in theory, but in practice all the onions in the last 10 years have become unbearably hot (in a sulfur way)
To me all raw onions pre-added to salads taste like bitter dust.
I unironically don’t like unprocessed tomatoes, but I have a sensory processing disorder and cannot swallow an orange if my life depended on it, so I may have controversial food preferences generally.
I have a sensory processing disorder and cannot swallow an orange
Like a whole orange? Or a piece of an orange slice
Piece. The texture makes me gag and closes my throat. Maybe I could try swallowing a whole, unpeeled one. Ahaha
If you are not on any medication or prescriptions, would grapefruit work better instead? It’s more easily to fully peel the internal skin unlike an orange.
I have never tried. I’m worried about money waste. I literally had local anesthesia surgeries where the anesthesia didn’t work which were less traumatic than trying to swallow a piece of orange. Maybe I should try. Thanks for the suggestion.
If you’re not in any medication (grapefruit has chemical compounds that can render a lot of medications useless due to how they unintentionally affect your liver), then grapefruit is extremely economical as it lasts a long time, you can break the portions of a single one over multiple days, it’s delicious, and you can fully peel them.
Hopefully this can help!
I just had my first grapefruit. It’s so revolutionary! You were indeed correct about how it can be actually completely peeled which allowed me to swallow it. :D Is there anything else which can be peeled as much? My grapefruit wasn’t very economical. it cost 1 euro and I ate the entire thing immediately. :|
I, for one, like it when my onions hurt me.
But communism is when no foood. NOOOOO
Turns out I’m a lib, because I eat food.
I understand it may be hard to accept that you have in fact become a lib. It’s just part of growing up y’know 😞
probably , trying to convince us to become libs.
You what?
😋
Can’t believe the admins have allowed this place to become this disgusting. This rule 2 violation is so blatant that it makes my stomach churn. I’ve been here for a long time, trying my best to be a good salad comrade, and now people like you can just waltz around and flagrantly talk about eating my people. Disappointing.
Peak leftist infighting lmao
Yummy yummy in my tummy UwU
A little red onion is nice, or finely sliced spring onions (scallions - a strange name, I’ve always thought, because it reminds me of the word rapscallion) Pearl barley is nice for a bit of bite.
A nice homemade dressing is the most important bit for me - once you’ve mastered the simple art of making a good dressing you will never have store-bought again!
I do love a Greek salad, a nice salty feta cheese is worth a chef’s kiss.
I keep green onions growing in my kitchen! Just snip snip snip whenever I want a handful for soups and salads (esp soups, a heap of fresh negi on ramen is divine)
I like greek salads. My gf and I do home greek night and always start it off with a greek salad. I like mine with crushed black olives.
When I was a kid I got sent to a juvenile center for kids with emotional troubles (that also for some reason doubled as a senior center? it was strange) but that place was awesome. We had buffet breakfast and lunch and got two P.E periods in a day. Anyways every day for lunch there I would go to the salad bar and fill my bowl with croutons because they were crunchy and good.
lettuce + thin raw tomato slices + cucumber slices + few raw onion slices + lime juice + salt is my favorite side salad. people need to remember to season their goddamn salads, it is the reason i hated my greens when i was younger my mom never seasoned them.
I’m bad at seasons. Is this spring already?
No, it’s fall.
A very painful season.
What if my salids right now are only tomatos?
Do you have saws recomendations
Do I need to use the big spoon for the grain?
First salt your tomatoes to season then to taste, then add plenty of sour cream to the tomatoes and mix to incorporate. Add pepper to taste.
Delicious.
If you have them, adding a cucumber to this dish elevates it even further.
Tomatoes are the goat, thinly sliced and seasoned with salt and pepper (add lime/lemon to take it another level) are already a good low calorie sidedish especially for fish.
Green olives, roasted sunflower seeds, and apples. These are also some good salad ingredients.
When I was still working in a kitchen, one of new found snacks was a salad with romaine lettuce, free protein from the naked & brined chicken tenders which I could sear and cut up, a bit of parmesan cheese, and a slight serving of aioli sauce was so good.
I don’t like raw tomatoes either. It was a wonderful discovery when I first made salads that you don’t need them. Salads are great, especially in the summer.
try seasoning your raw tomatoes, they’re great.
Tomatoes are good smh
Onions shouldn’t be served raw but boiled or at least run through hot waterWhat does that do to the flavour, soften it?
Yeah
Hot water? Boiled onions? No thanks. Pickled onions yes.
Nah raw onion is great, it just needs to be thinly sliced so it doesn’t overpower the other stuff.
Eat it raw, whole, with the skin on. Abbott style.
I like green goddess dressing ideally on endive with those little baby tomatoes in all the different colors. Its one of my splurge food items i’d eat way more if I could along with kelp salad.
