Kinda sucks that this stuff still hasn’t been addressed.
I’ve personally known people that have been told that they are “too old” for things like jobs or uni admissions in China. I’ve seen the job postings that recruiters put on apps like wechat as well and some of them will even say things like “female wanted” or “female European only.”
The vid also mentions 996, which is technically illegal but it happens all the time. Know a few ppl who used to work this schedule.
I think in terms of things like infrastructure (e.g. high speed rail, etc.) China is doing pretty well. But when it comes to things like ageism, racism, sexism, and other forms of discrimination they still have quite a way to go.
Why the straw man? No one here makes that claim.
I thought I saw a comment like it the other day, turns out it was actually you: https://lemmygrad.ml/post/7795835/6336425
Though I assumed and still do that you were being somewhat tongue-in-cheek using the expression, not trying to imply that it can do no wrong.
I do think it’s possible someone could read some of the posts on lemmygrad and have the takeaway that there are people who are uncritically supporting China on everything and assuming it’s a fully realized utopia. But some of that, if so, may be a misread on tone. The way I see it, China represents a government actually working for its people at a large scale and that along with its anti-imperialist positioning, means it is easy to look up to it for those of us who are dealing with liberal capitalist hell. But it should be understood that it’s more about comparison than about idealizing it. Many of us who post here, supposing migrant obstacles were not a factor, would probably be struggling less in China, but that doesn’t mean no one struggles in China; a key distinction.
That’s what I meant too. It’s true that you will see a lot of praise for China and very little criticism. The balance is not really objective. But that is the outcome of two factors. First is that the climate here is shaped directly by what the mainstream media is like. Even in 2025 mainstream stenographers have a racist and warmongering outlook towards China which is 99% untethered from reality. There is no point really in trying to meet these ghouls in the middle. China has made tremendous achievements. They have gone from being a playground for all flavours of colonialsts to one of the most advanced countries in the world but they don’t care about that. The second is that we can’t criticise China earnestly because we don’t live in China neither do we speak or read Chinese. I have lived in an anglo country for a little while and have learnt that most people don’t have the mental framework, let alone the requisite information, to understand and critique a foreign culture.
It would be nice if China were vehemently anti-Israel and somehow were able to use their uniquely powerful position outside the West to prevent the genocide in Palestine but I am not gonna waste time being mad at China while the western world unanimously arms Israel and jails and disappears their own people who voice their opposition to it. I don’t want to have to say good things about China. I would rather just go about my day. But for that I would like my own country to not be a tool for western encirclement of a peaceful country like China while having a hunger index worse than DPRK’s.
Huuuuuh yeah a lot of people here are making that claim.
Please don’t lie on easily verifiable facts.
Please verify this easily verifiable claim.
to be fair, a lot of things are better than sliced bread, including China
