Sublette County Sheriff K.C. Lehr has received more than 7,000 emails about a Wyoming man who reportedly captured and tormented a wolf before killing it, he told Cowboy State Daily on Wednesday.

Some of those are threats.

Lehr said people in his office, as well as Sublette County and Wyoming Game and Fish Department personnel, have been receiving threats — including death threats — stemming from Daniel, Wyoming, man Cody Roberts’ reported capture, torment and killing of a wild wolf in late February.

Man, that sad, defeated face in the wolf. The title made me think it was just torture and I assumed he got saved. But the fucker killed it. He deserves everything shit he gets.

Unpopular Opinion: I’d like to know what happened to the wolf and how it ended up like this in the first place. If he lasso’d it from 5 meters after it tried to eat his cat and it was released by fish and game after a week, then I cannot be mad about this.

If he drove 40 miles to get this wolf out of it’s habitat and tape it’s mouth shut then ate it, that’s death threat material.

He found a wounded animal and ran it over with a snowmobile, taped its mouth shut, paraded it around a bar, then took it behind the bar and tortured and killed it.

Bro, what? You’re okay with animal torture?

We’re talking about torture if an animal doing nothing except what it was born to do.

Torture of an animal has zero place in normality. Dispatching an animal that threatens your family or pets as a means to protect is one thing, torture is not acceptable under any circumstances.

Not this specific cruelty, no. Sherriff was 100% in the wrong from the moment he was driving his snowmobile drunk.

But I can forgive a seal clubbing if the seal is 500 lbs and attacking a puppy. Context matters, nothing is black and white.

There very much are things that are black and white, I think the majority would consider animal torture as black and white.

If nothing is black and white and context matters, could you please provide your take on when female genital mutilation is sometimes okay? Or when rape or pedophilia are okay in certain circumstances?

The wolf is a dumb animal. It doesn’t understand ethics or morality or the relationships between a cat and a human. It barely has a sense of interspecies empathy. The human knows better. He knows he’s inflicting suffering for absolutely no reason but spite, and he’s choosing to do that anyway.

"The wolf was already injured before Roberts ran it over with a snowmobile.

He reportedly dragged it through the Green River Bar as regulars swilled beer before taking it behind the bar, torturing it and killing it."

Cody Roberts, 42, was fined $250 for being in possession of the live wolf but it was not illegal to kill it, sparking outrage from animal rights activists.

Roberts posed with the traumatised animal, flashing a toothy grin while hooking his arm around its neck and raising a can of beer.

The wolf was already injured before Roberts ran it over with a snowmobile.

He reportedly dragged it through the Green River Bar as regulars swilled beer before taking it behind the bar, torturing it and killing it.

She posted photos to Facebook of herself with her mouth taped shut, just like the wolf, while holding the skin in front of her.

Ivie-Roberts wrote in another post after Roberts’ picture went viral: “I love and support you Cody”.

She also celebrated the news that animal cruelty laws didn’t apply to Roberts’ case, and another family member claimed they were getting death threats.

Animals rights activists were up in arms and became even more furious when it was confirmed Roberts would only face a small fine.

The Animal Wellness Action and the Center for a Humane Economy wrote a letter to officials. Inside vile dog-fighting ring where animals are forced to ‘train’ on treadmills before mauling each other to death

It stated that Roberts actions clearly warrant a punishment more severe than the $250 ticket he received for possession of live wildlife the Animal Wellness Action and the Center for a Humane Economy wrote in a letter to officials.

It added: “Such an anemic response on the part of law enforcement will be seen by some as tacit approval of his crime and can only motivate other like-minded individuals driven by hatred of wolves to engage in similar, repugnant behaviour.”

And Ivie-Roberts post garnered dozens of comments from users, most of whom supported the hunter.

One said he “has a good heart” and another wrote: “I’m with him!!! I’ll bring the duct tape.”

But some were appalled, with one writing: “Cruelty should never be condoned! No reason for that BS behaviour.”

Wayne Pacelle, president of Animal Wellness Action branded Roberts a “monster” and said he should not escape prosecution.

He said: "The man who committed this atrocious act of animal cruelty cannot go without punishment under state or federal law, or both,” wrote Pacelle, who worked to make animal cruelty a felony in dozens of states and to make animal cruelty a federal crime.

“Running over and crushing an animal with a snowmobile, binding the battered and wounded animal’s mouth shut, and deciding to further torment the creature in front of an audience rather than putting him out of his misery is the textbook definition of malicious cruelty."

He continued: "A remorseless, cruel monster like this is a threat to other animals, and a threat to people. The law must speak.”

Roberts, who is a dad and owns a trucking company, first encountered the wolf when he ran it down with a snowmobile and disabled it.

But, instead of putting the animal out of its misery he allegedly prolonged its suffering by taking it to the bar.

It is legal to kill wolves in the part of Sublette County, but by keeping the animal alive and tormenting it as Roberts did, he was violating hunting ethics.

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department confirmed that a man had been cited and fined for the misconduct, but did not name them.

But Sublette County Circuit Court records showed Roberts was cited for a wildlife violation from an incident on February 29.

According to public records, Roberts has a hunting and fishing license.

It comes as a vile dog-fighting ring where animals are forced to ‘train’ on treadmills before mauling each other to death can be revealed.

Phillip Ali - known as “Doctor Death” - gave animals steroids in a bid to win sick bouts in a couple’s garage at their suburban home in Essex.

The 68-year-old was found guilty of multiple cruelty charges, alongside homeowners Billy, 38, and Amy Leadley, 39 - and accomplice Stephen Brown, 56.

Thousands of pounds could be won in the deadly fights organised by Ali, with his dogs trained to rip each other apart, a court heard.

I mean, I get it, it’s a wolf and can pose a danger to livestock and or people. But if you are aiming to kill it, then just shoot it in the head for a clean kill, if you miss the clean kill get up and put it out of it’s misery.

What demented kind of fuck gets pleasure doing this. The poor animal is just doing it’s thing and being what nature made it. It didn’t have a choice to be born a wolf instead of a Chihuahua.

They’re not in danger of extinction.

Not that it makes it right but their populations are stable enough that hunting doesn’t threaten them. Especially with protected reserves to serve as sanctuaries - like Yellowstone.

This wouldn’t even be news if that piece of shit had just killed her cleanly like a normal functioning human that’s capable of even a drop of empathy. The fact that he hurt and tortured a wolf pup like this is what’s most revolting to me. I also hate that there are really no consequences for torturing wildlife apparently? That’s weird. There definitely should be. Civilized society should penalize any form of torture because nobody worth anything wants to do that.

Details of where I’m talking about we’re already included in the context of the original comment and my reply mentioning Yellowstone. We’re talking the American West.

            Here’s proof - https://www.nps.gov/yell/learn/nature/wolf-restoration.htm

Legal Status of a Recovered Population

The biological requirements for removing the wolf from the endangered species list have been achieved: at least 300 wolves and three consecutive years of at least 30 breeding pairs across three recovery areas.

Interesting article but it doesn’t provide any proof that wolves are not in danger of going extinct again. In fact it suggests the opposite where several states have had to list them again. From what I see, it was lobbying from those who stand to gain from not protecting them that got them delisted in a number of circumstances. I can’t prove that but the fact that in areas where they relaxed protections the numbers got low enough to list them again goes in the face of your argument.

At some point there is a line drawn in the sand that “xyz” means they are no longer in danger of going extinct. It may just be a text book definition but thats what the person is showing you. You can disagree and say “it suggests the opposite” or it doesn’t provide proof, but that take can be applied to anything.

We can say humans are going to be going extinct because of the climate crisis. While a valid concern it may not meet the text book definition of going extinct so we are not on the list.

Dis this man they can’t be added back later? No of course not. But at this point in time whoever makes up the rules think they meet the criteria for being labeled a recovering population.

Yellowstone is a federal park that has federal rules protecting them.

States can bitch and moan all they want but there is a massive reserve dedicated to keeping them alive and their population in that reserve is not at any risk of going extinct.

By your logic (IE they could be killed off) - everything is always in danger of going extinct because not immortal and omnipotent creatures outside of the realm of human influence.

I think there’s a term for that but I’m not sure what exactly it is.

An animal’s population is counted as distinct between the wild groups and the groups in reserves and captivity. So I think it’s correct to say that they are endangered in the wild.

I hope he doesn’t die. I hope he’s injured critically and bedridden in a hospital with enough brain trauma to need to stay hospitalized but not so much that he’s unaware of his situation.

I hope he experiences what I’ve seen with CON patients so many times before as their family slowly abandons them. It starts out with visits every day, then life gets busy. Next thing you know, it’s once a week. Once a month. Holidays only. When they can remember. A few times, even once a year.

Then the outright shame avoidance starts where your family wishes they could forget you exist. They may stop visit all together. All along I wish this man bedridden in the same room the rest of his hopefully long long life, watching reruns of parks and rec and the office. Knowing the family that has abandoned him. Kids that dont visit. A wife who has found someone new.

I hope he lives through all that and is put on suicide watch so he is restrained to his bed and forced to dope up on antidepressants and antipsychotics. And I hope he lives to be 100.

Imagine you’re about to eat an ice-cream. You see a kid drowning in a pool. You could save him, but instead you choose to eat your ice cream. You put short term pleasure before saving a child’s life. Evil, right?

Now imagine that you can’t see the kid. You know he’s going to die, but instead of donating a bit of money to a charity, you buy that ice cream, drink that fancy frappucino, buy that t-shirt or overpriced gadget you didn’t actually need to buy. You put a short term endorphin rush above saving a child’s life.

This is you. This is everyone. Humans are all evil to a degree. We are all hypocrites to a degree. We allow that kid to die, those workers to get abused, those animals to suffer. The only excuse we have is that we are animals and that we largely act on instinct, even if we rationalise our choices afterwords, often telling ourselves we’re not bad people.

Once you accept that basic fact, mostly because life experience has forced you to come to terms with your flaws, you hopefully become more humble. You gain character, wisdom, and honesty. And here’s a silver lining: once you realise that you’re also deeply flawed and approach fellow humans with humility, you often end up becoming more convincing.

Of course, the first step is to accept that convincing people to be less evil, is more important than vanity and holding to the idea that you’re somehow better than them.

Here’s Norm McDonald telling a joke about hypocrisy:

Just because all humans are flawed doesn’t mean that we should just ignore everything around us and accepts that the world is evil, when simple actions such as not consuming animal products does make a difference.

Oh, of course. But once you accept that all humans are flawed, you’re more likely to empathize with people who make poor choices, relate to them, and become more convincing.

So for example, you don’t call people hypocrites and a murderers, which will inevitably cause them to become defensive and double down. Especially in a conversation where people are already expressing that they dissaprove of animal abuse. Instead you say something like:

“Same here. Animal suffering also makes me sad, and I couldn’t help but think that I was part of that. I slowly transitioned to eating no meat a while back. But I know it’s hard to make changes. If anyone wants tips, just ask. No judgement.”

              Or perhaps:

“Yeah. Food’s really becoming expensive. One thing that does help, is that I eat vegetarian curries. They cost less to make and it’s not that hard. I found this cool recipe and use a rice cooker so I can take care of the kids while it cooks.”

I mean, imagine people who own a fairphone and buy only fair trade chocolate, went around calling the rest of us cunts. They might have a point, but it really wouldn’t help them win the argument.

Ah, yes. But here’s the thing.

If you make a polite and reasonable comment about veganism and it’s met with hostility, you’re more likely to come across as the good guy and those attacking you come across as arseholes. People reading the exchange are more likely to think that the guy defending veganism or animal rights may have a point.

If you come in all guns blazing, and attack people, people are just as likely to think you’re the arsehole.

Right, it’s clearly the people who kill animals for their (taste) pleasure that are humble, wise and honsest lmao.

While I’m not a vegan, I have a tremendous amount of respect for your position here and I absolutely love your way of explaining things. You exemplify your philosophy very well and this is refreshing to see.

Thank you for the work you’re doing to calm the waters.

Of course, the first step is to accept that convincing people to be less evil, is more important than vanity and holding to the idea that you’re somehow better than them.

Of course I believe that. I believe the best way to convince people not to kill is to shame killers. It’s nothing to do with my ego. It’s not hypocrisy to want there to be less death in the world, and accusing me of letting children drown or wanting to be superior is not only silly, it’s irrelevant to your own actions. It’s just a mechanism for you to process your shame. You know killing is bad and you want an excuse. You think if you can change the subject to my actions and how I’m not Literally Superman, then you won’t have to think about your actions. But tough nuts because we are not changing the subject. I proposed a truce. We won’t say your actions are wrong if you don’t kill animals. That way you don’t have to deal with mean words, and the animals don’t have to deal with murder. I daresay that approaches fairness. If you want to make the argument that mean words are incomparable to a life and the animals are getting a bloody good deal out of a truce, then yeah, I guess their lives are more important than your feelings, how bout that!

I’m vegan and have been for years.

Your moral pontificating may be good for your own ego, but at the end of the day Burger King’s vegan nuggets have done more to promote veganism, than lectures from the terminally online. Be honest with yourself. You’re not doing it to convert people. You’re doing it to feel good about yourself. Vanity. It’s the Devil’s favourite sin.

You know how I convert people? I make them nice food and give them recipe tips.

I agree. Burger King is an international business valued at 7 billion dollars with millions upon millions of dollars. I’m a regular person, and broke to boot. I’m never going to be able to do as much for veganism as Burger King, no matter how hard I try.

You can’t really trust a person like this to exist as a free individual in a society. Never mind not having a grain of sympathy even when directly observing the pain and suffering of another living being, he seems to be enjoying it. He is basically like a 5 year old with no understanding of the consequences of his action.

It concerns me how accepted and common that type of mindset seems to be in America right now.

Is it? I don’t know anyone who thinks it’s acceptable to torture an animal of any kind.

I don’t think there are a whole lot of people that are okay with animal cruelty.

Cruelty to other people does seem okay with about 50% of people. Interesting, no?

All people who take the lives of animals for pleasure deserve this treatment.

And yes, paying a hired killer to murder someone for you counts as murder.

I’m reading this as an extremely thinly veiled point about meat consumption, but I don’t think meat eaters relish in or enjoy the suffering of the animals they eat. They’re a party to it, sure. But this guy is a different kind of evil,

I don’t care what exact part of the process of killing for pleasure causes the pleasure. The action is the same. The harm is the same. I don’t care about motives for murder except in the interest of preventing them.
