It probably sounds a little weird, but while I was sitting at the safety of my “occupy a desk until someone asks questions” job that sapped my soul, I often would research places I really, really wouldn’t want to be.

In a weird way I find this “Dark tourism behind a screen” to be a bit fascinating in a "safe danger " kind of way.

Reading the state department’s notices on some countries really puts in perspective. They’re like “Don’t go here without an armored vehicle, armed security detail, and most preferably a good friggin reason. Even still, have a next of kin lined up and ransom plans.”

    Like. Damn.

Nobody should ever go to North Korea. You’re giving money to the most repressive regime on earth so you can take pictures of their misery

I think Dubai should be high on the list. A vapid city without history that only attracts people because of being expensive.

It’s thriving die to slave labor and violent racism.

Dubai in particular just seems so fake, and I get the impression that unless you are very, very rich the people there la k all respect for you.

That is what I thought about Dubai, before I learned about the Dubai porta potty, needless to say, my impression of Dubai sank even lower

before I learned about the Dubai porta potty

I was expecting some sort of ridiculous public sanitation custom. I knew about suspicious weird stories about models “getting on flights and never coming back” but the details make it even worse.

Wish there were people like John Wick to move through these grotesque billionaire circles and purge the monsters entirely.

I have always had zero interest of travelling to or supporting the place, and this only reinforces that.

all the ones that are super-authtorian ones: russia, NK, USA, Saudia arabia if you are in a certain demographic. all the war torn ones that were ruined by israel. places where you have no experience in, like deep jungle in South and central america, and antartica and also mt everest, K2.

too many westerners thought they could venture out in the jungle with no directions or guides.

I’d say inside the country, it’s not as bad as the news makes it sound, because cameras are only pointing at the worst events. It’s a pretty big country and most people are content to just leave each other alone.

…But a huge radius around the borders or airports are “Constitution-free” zones where nobody has any rights, and our borders/customs folks have a reputation for being less than kind. And those zones, bad enough as they are, are so freakishly large that most people in any populated area are within those zones…so…

      …Yeah, maybe wait. . .

So I was watching a video the other day about weird coincidences, and there was one entry where some guy was told he’d already checked in for a flight. After much confusion, it turned out there were two guys of the exact same name booked on the same flight going to the same place.

Two balding middle aged white guys. Travelling alone - until they each made a new friend anyway - to Thailand.

I’ve heard Egypt is particularly bad for this.

I also got offered 20 camels for my girlfriend at the time in Tunisia. I did that chap a big favour by not taking him up on his offer.

Depends. A married couple travelling to Japan is less concerning than a loli obsessed single man

I feel like Thailand is a more concerning destination for single men, but I’m not familiar with other sex tourism destinations. I know the Dominican Republic was big for some but I was just there with my wife and didn’t see anything concerning.

Thailand has a LOT to offer and do that has nothing to do with sex tourism; that’s just an unfortunate reputation that they get because of a few places like in Bangkok and Pattaya but Thailand is an incredible country in many other categories as well. Literally the best food on the planet

Oh I know. I’ve been there, twenty years ago. It’s a wonderful place and I hope to take my kids there some day.

But the reputation isn’t for no reason. It’s at the top of my list for problematic places for single men to travel alone to, but that doesn’t mean it’s not an awesome place to go or even that all single men traveling solo are there for bad intent.

I would highly encourage people to go there. The more non-sex tourism they get, the better for everyone, I think.

I’m not judging any individual, I said a solo male vacation to Thailand is a flag. Which is the whole point of the post, so what are you even saying here? I hope when I check you are admonishing everyone else who responded…

Oh look at that… not just that but you are a top level commenter judging people. Hmmm.
