      It is French for vegetables (“les légumes”), but the English meaning is somewhat different. It’s basically lentils, beans, peanuts, chickpeas and such: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legume

      Sometimes, they’re also referred to as “pulses”.

        last time I called them pulses my coworkers though I was talking about something sexual. legumes it is.

      Dunno in French but it Portuguese the word legumes kinda got misused over time to mean just vegetables. We have the word “leguminosas” to mean legume-type foods.
