As a nerdy kid with longish hair and few male role models, I really, really looked up to this guy. Hercules, Xena, Kull, and then Andromeda.

He fell off my radar for a while but I was pleasantly entertained when I found him in the Mythica series. I’d always thought well of him.

Eventually I heard about God Is Not Dead and looked into the rest of his more right wing work… Its really heartbreaking when people you respected or even idolized as a kid turn out to be so… gross and just… weird.

Now he again pops up on my radar with stupid shit like this. So sad.

When I was a kid I had a pillow version of Hulk Hogan. Now he’s taking pictures and shaking hands with literal nazis.

“Never meet your heroes” applies to just getting to know who they are from a distance too unfortunately.

Yeah, Hogan is another guy who is just nuts. I think he’s always been a piece of shit. I heard he notified management of Ventura’s talk of a wrestler’s union which killed it before it could gain any traction.

Kevin Sorbo is only slightly less disappointing than JK Rowling and Graham Linehan. It boggles my mind that there are so many of my childhood idles who decide that making other people feel bad is the hill that they want to die on.

Not really, he has a stereotype of what a Black person acts like, that includes saying the n word.

He can’t comprehend there are some people who are both Black and find the word distasteful. So to him if a Black person won’t say it, then they’re not Black.

It’s perfectly logical when looking at it from a racists viewpoint. And if you haven’t noticed there’s a lot of them these days, it’s important to understand how they think, so you can do risk management on what they’re trying to do.

Do t just write them off as “evil” and illogical because that makes it harder to fight them. Their logic might not be based on facts or critical thinking but there is a type of logic there. Flawed logic is still logic.

It’s not about if they want to say it or not it is about society accepting if they can say it or not. When a non-black person sings a rap song, they are supposed to omit the n-word. If you are black, you’re free to say it when desired.

This is basically saying. What if Karmala is raping and gets to an n-word. Is she free to say it?

She is not “African-American” which the word refers to

African-Americans accepting her into the “black” group based on skin color is essentially reverse racism. “She looks like us so she can be one of us”

This is coming from a white Mexifinn-American. I don’t get accepted as being Mexican because I don’t have the skin color, and I don’t get accepted as Finnish because I have a Hispanic last name. I don’t care because I enjoy being treated as an American. I get treated like I’m “white” though.

Sad reality is Harris would get treated as “black”

        I don’t have a n-word card to give so I can’t make the call

Although I laughed at the idea of Kamala Harris casually assaulting people, then drawing the line at black people, it’s “Rapping” not “raping”.

How about she’s black because it’s not only how she identifies and her skin color, but also because it’s the US and the average bigot on the street (or on Lemmy) isn’t going to go, “Hey I’ll take it easy on this one because I know her her blackness comes from Jamaica.”

No one needs to “accept” that I’m white, and I don’t give a fuck whether they do. I very much doubt that Kamala give a shit who “accepts” her as black, and I’m very sure she doesn’t care what a bunch of bigoted republicans think about the matter.

You know how I know when someone’s comment about race is going to hold no value whatsoever? When they think “reverse racism” has meaning of any kind.

          Eh

It’s not as cut and dry as it used to be.

Even a decade ago, Ice Cube made eye contact with me at a concert and said it’s weird if we dont sing it when singing along. Like, he said it to the whole audience I’m just tall as fuck, was standing up front, and at peak tan look like a sheet of printer paper.

It stopped being a clear cut (black and white if you would) issue a long time ago.

I mean, if you’re around Black people who use it frequently, eventually you’re going to say it. You might feel bad the first time, there might be a discussion, but that’s just how language works.

Picking up words/phrases/idioms isn’t something that happens consciously. Especially when the people around you use it to refer to you too. Not like there’s a milestone you hit and you get permission. But if people say it referring to you just like anyone else that’s using it, eventually you’re gonna say it.

It all depends on how someone says it, and how they handle themselves.

Like if you half ass every word and then scream the n word, people aren’t gonna be happy. Bouncing your head and it comes out like every other word?

I’d be real surprised if anyone mentioned it

Half a decade ago, Kendrick Lemar kicked a white woman off stage for saying it.

She apparently had the rap down and didn’t think about it.

I wouldn’t say it in public, in a quote or song. The amount of people that would get angry at you is more than the people that would stand up for you.

Oh wow, i was going to write a whole speech about how “blacks are animals” is not how modern racism works. It can’t be That is a 17th century view on racism and today’s racism is much more about politics, fear, insecurity and sometimes just social ignorance. Surely a public and succesful person like Kevin Sorbo would not be so brain damaged as to think black people are not human.

Imagine my surprise when I find he literally called black people animals…

Do you need me to explain the joke?

The common standard is that it is OK for black people to use this word, but not for anyone else to do so. For example, a black rapper may say it but a white fan singing along with the music may not repeat it. Such a distinction seems arbitrary to some people.

The humor here comes from treating this standard as a law of nature as opposed to a subjective judgement. If indeed there was such a law of nature, it would be possible to conclusively determine whether or not someone was black by having her say the word and scientifically measuring whether or not she was being offensive.

The idea that offensiveness has an objective existence outside of the human mind and the mental image of Harris undergoing such testing are ridiculous and therefore funny. The additional implication that the original distinction is also ridiculous makes the joke transgressive and therefore more exciting.

Being white as a sheet of paper and only knowing like 5 black people in total, I might not be the best one to chime in. But at least the ones I know are very much not okay with other black people using the N word. That is in Germany, might be somewhat different somewhere else.

I think black people in Germany are usually relatively recent immigrants directly from Africa and so they don’t have much culture in common with African Americans. Attitudes among African Americans vary, and a lot of that variation is related to social class. Pretty much no one wants to hear white people saying it but working-class African Americans living in segregated neighborhoods are much more likely to say it themselves than middle-class, more assimilated African Americans are. However, the attitudes of the (frequently white) people who might get you in trouble for being racist are much more uniform; the “common standard” is about what these people think.

To me it seems like statements like this are just meant to provoke a reaction. There really are people who get their jollies from arguing, regardless what the argument is about or which side of it they’re taking.

If you notice a sudden shift after season 2, that’s because Kevin got the rights and changed the show to be more episodic, and more about his character. It’s why the actors of the other main crew start to drop off.

He’s got a whole line of really cringey anti-Atheism movies (check out the “God’s Not Dead” series trails) and he’s been dipping his toe into the MAGA sphere since Trump took office.
