Meanwhile joe biden: “gosh darn it I heckin wish I could do anything about these student loans that I passed a bill to protect from bankruptcy discharge, shucks”
Pretending Biden did nothing to alleviate student loan debt when the reality is he rolled out an unprecedented number of programs, largely blocked by courts, is disingenuous
As is pretending that, just because it’s unprecedented to do ANYTHING about it, his means tested to death efforts were anywhere near enough.
In fact, the very means testing was HOW they managed to throw it out in court: by arguing that it’s discriminatory to give debt relief to some, but not all.
You and I know that it’s just a pretense, but if he had NOT included all of those overly restrictive terms and conditions, they couldn’t use that and might not have succeeded.
And before you chime in with “but we have to make sure that only those who REALLY need debt relief gets it”, first of all, no.
Making sure that all the people that DO need it get it and get it easily is many times more important than making sure that people who don’t need it as badly won’t.
Second of all, the truly rich don’t HAVE student loans: if they came from a rich family, their parents paid outright, and if not, they did so themselves later. Nobody’s at risk of paying Elon Musk’s student loans.
I think the biggest failure of the Biden government is that they didn’t get out there and make enough noise about what they actually did accomplish, I know months before Obama’s *first term was up he was on TV often explaining exactly what he did accomplish and what he planned on doing for another term, and he called out GOP obstructionism very clearly.
Damn I must’ve missed the part where that’s what I said
Well it was a nice country while we had it. …. So long, and thanks for all the fish….
Grab ‘em by the pursey… and when you’re a big star, The $upreme Court will usher you to it.
His plan, known as “impoundment,” threatens to provoke a major clash over the limits of the president’s control over the budget. The Constitution gives Congress the sole authority to appropriate the federal budget, while the role of the executive branch is to dole out the money effectively. But Trump and his advisers are asserting that a president can unilaterally ignore Congress’ spending decisions and “impound” funds if he opposes them or deems them wasteful.
And what a surprise, his plan is blatantly unconstitutional.
And this is where Unitary Executive Theory gets you. Trump has been sold on the idea of being a complete autocrat for years now, and we shouldn’t be surprised when he acts as an autocrat would.
We can only hope that his diet kills him sooner than later.
I dunno about blantantly. Not spending could be considered efficient. And one could argue that it is part of the checks and balances… it is certainly not the spirit of the constitution, but we know it isn’t about the spirit. And really, the constitution just isn’t the end all be all. The guys who wrote it were just making it up as they went along. That said, republican congress will fight it tooth and nail. They can always just impeach him.
They can always just impeach him.
I’m wondering if you are young enough that you do not remember Trump’s first presidency. Impeachment in itself does nothing.
In the past it was just the democrates. But if he trys to take power from all of congress, the both sides of the isle will line up to be rid of him. He is mostly useless to them now anyway.
It must be nice to feel so optimistic.
Gotta try right? But seriously, they have already started pushing back on some of his cabinet picks. And when there was talk of recess appointments, they pushed back as well. So they are already showing that they don’t intend to be steamrolled.
he’s gonna try to “impound” funds like alabama sheriffs pocket unspent prisoner meal funds… right into his own pocket.
Alabama?
Buddy that’s legal almost anywhere…
Sorry, pal, the dart landed on Alabama.
I don’t know if Republicans will accept this. As much as they fear betraying Trump, taking away their power in Congress is exactly the type of move that could get Trump impeached (a third time).
Oh gosh, he wouldn’t want that would he? After all the consequences he faced from being impeached the first two times
It’s all an interesting thing and we need to keep in mind that people who support Trump in the courts and in the house and senate, they don’t do it because they like the man. They’re doing it to wield power. But as they give away power to Trump, as they take it away from themselves and give it to Donald Trump, they become less relevant.
So anytime we hear about a plan like this that sounds like it would be simple, the reality is that it’s far from simple. If you’re not a necessary cog in the chain, no one’s going to bribe you. And you’re there so that they have to bribe you.
It is endlessly frustrating to watch liberals hear the fascism, see the fascism, and then decide things will just work out on their own.
